Well, in context of the chapter especially vs's 7,8 and 9, Paul is speaking to believers, letting them know as James so strongly reminded us that faith without works is dead or useless. To me he is saying that our charity should reach out to all people but he, as John always does, differentiates between believers and non-believers and says our loyalty should lie with our brethren in the Lord.

It'd be nice if you would have given the verse:

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

I think it says that the Christians are supposed to be willing to help anybody to show the love of Christ.
The second part is reminding the early Christians to care for each other. Christianity first took up in the lower classes of the Roman cities, and it provided a social care system for its 'family.' (You know, the deacons are charged with caring for the widows, etc.)
Also, it reminded the Jewish Christians that the Gentiles were also Christians and needed support/shouldn't be neglected or ostracized.

The verse says, "So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith."

The first part is pretty self-explanatory -- do good to all. Treat others as you'd want to be treated. It's pretty clear.

The second part involves the Christian community during St. Paul's time. At the time, it was heavily persecuted. The Christians at that time had absolutely no one to rely on but each other -- and since they were very much a minority, that meant that there were few people on whom Christians could rely for help.

So, because there were so few of them, it was important for them to be there for each other at every opportunity. That's what Paul was driving at.

I view it in a similar way to the Golden Rule. That we should love our fellow man, praticularly by teaching them the truth so that they may have a shot at eternal life but also by deeds of loving kindness to them. First and foremost should we show love to our spiritual brothers, but we should also show love to those who are not.

It's a very important verse meaning for Christians to do good to everyone, including fellow believers.

Add in verse 9 also.

It is discouraging to continue to do right and receive no world of thanks or see no tangible results. But Paul challenged the Galations and he challenges us to keep on doing good and to trust God for the results. In due time, we will reap a harvest of blessing.

It is a proposal that all who follow the way of Christ get out there and show people how well-off it is to be a believer!

Thanks Jonathan for the question.
I think we need to do good to all people whenever we have opportunity to do so, especially to our fellow believers in Christ.
We need to be mindful of being a blessing, useful & profitable in practical ways to the people who come in contact with us and to be a spiritual blessing as well.

it's a good one - advice from the new test always is - even though i get a bit confused sometimes between messages of love everyone equally and hate those who hate the lord ... but we are to love and support those who are already with christ and steer those who aren't, which will hopefully lead to loving and supporting friendships ... hope that helps!

Hello again Brother Jonathan:)
Just wanted to share something on this verse that you posted
Galatians 6:10
" So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do what is good toward all, but especially toward those of the household of faith"

We see some specifics in the Book of 2 Corinthians9:6-9 with regard to " doing good"

" But take not of this: He who sows sparingly shall also sparingly reap and he who sows with blessings shall also with blessings reap
Each one as he has purposed in his heart, not out of sorrow or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver
And God is able to make all grace abound unto you , that , in everything always having all sufficiency, you may abound in every good work
Even as it is written, He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor, his righteousness abides forever"

So brother this good toward all refers mainly to the ministering of the material things to the needy.

With regard to the household of faith its in reference to the " children of promise"
Galatians 4:28
" But you, brothers, in the way Isaac was, are children of promise"
These children of promise are children born of the heavely Jerusalem through grace under the covanant of promise. These are all sons of God through faith in Christ ( Gal 3:26)
All believers in Christ together constitute a universal household, the great Family of God. This is through faith in Christ, not through the works of law. This Household, brother Jonathan as the One New man ( Col 3:10-11) is composed of all the members of Christ, with Christ as their constituent. So brother, we should do good toward those of this household, regardless of race or social rank

Gal3:28
" There cannot be Jew nor Greek, there cannot be slave nor free man, there cannot be male and female for YOU ARE ALL ONE in Christ Jesus"
hallelujah!!

Praise the Lord that we have been called unto such a blessed life and living each day. Giving ourselves for God's purpose. May we be so giving and open to the Lord.. that He can direct us to give of ourselves to the Household of faith in love.

I really pray that the Lord can unveil our eyes more and more to see this matter and give ourselves for it in every way.

Ty for posting such a powerful verse
Your sister in this household of Faith
sandy
