Get involved in different organizations. Get to know people and develop relationships with them. Then they will come to you and refer friends and family.

Be involved in your church, charities, rotary club, toastmasters, Jaycees (if young enough), lions club etc. People get to know you..then when they buy a new car or a friend of a theirs buys a new car..they go "hey, I've got a friend at church that's an agent, you should call him".

The company that I work for does most of it's marketing this way - more grass roots.

Buy insurance leads to start off to get yourself rolling. Forget the whole "contact your friends and family routine" as that is shortlived. Once you get established you can circle back for them as they will see your success and be more likely to work with you.

Be an information source, non-threatening, no pressure...i.e. "hey, let me give you a free comparison type offers to see if you can save them money, give better coverage, etc.."

It is impossible to avoid annoying some people just as it is impossible to avoid them yourself. Put it out there with tact and grace, don't take the mean one's personally and keep focus on your goal. Remember it takes many NO's to get 1 YES. No usually means they need more information.....Good Luck!

Just ask....you're not annoying someone until after they say no and you continue talking.
