Take Washington's old warning as he left his second term: "Beware of entangling alliances." He was speaking then about France and Britain - America, he thought, ought to steer clear of those countries and their imperial ambitions as best it could.
Given how soundly the British thrashed the Americans in the War of 1812, getting drawn into their wars would be unwise policy, to say the least.
