Where is this society of atheist serial killers? I want to know so I can keep away!
What about the multitude of atheists who insist they lead happy, meaningful lives. WE ARE NOT DEPRESSED!
The purpose of life is the purpose I give it. Truth is, the same is true of you - otherwise you'd be a nun. And so what if it's a happy accident? Did you never find a dollar in the street?

What does religion have to do with serial killers/homeless/etc? Want to do some research on the % of serial killers that believe in a god compared to those that don't?
I have a huge purpose in life. I love my family, my friends, and my fellow men/women. I donate my time every week to homeless shelters and I'm always the first to open a door or to say hello to a stranger. AND guess what?!? I do it on my OWN WILL. Not that I think a god would be pleased by my actions or because it is written somewhere that I have to be a good person.

1.- Only if you give it meaning
2.- Of course
3.- I'd say hang them for being serial killers.
4.- The rest of society can pitch in and help. There are GOVERNMENTALLY FUNDED PROGRAMS that can help people like this- religion not included. If someone wanted to live, they would look into this- and I assure you, if the person made it back on their feet, its because their will to live was strong enough to overcome the opposition. Whether religion is a factor or not- people can pull through tough times.
5.- Live it up in this life? Hah! We all have a responsibility to our own lives. Our life will suck if we don't do the things we HAVE to do to get the things we NEED. AGAIN! Religion not necessary- I get by just fine (I have a decent car, a nice place to live, all sorts of musical instruments to play on, art supplies, etc...). I didn't just pull this stuff out my butt, you know! I EARNED it. By MYSELF. Nobody helped me, nobody forked over the cash for it, and I didn't pray for it. I just went out, worked, and bought it.
Wanna know something- I don't think there is a purpose to life. There's just life. Its the only thing we're "guaranteed"- the here and now. I don't know if there's a tomorrow, SO I'm going to live my life as if today will be the last- while keeping tomorrow in mind. Whats to stop me from hooking up with the nearest chick and spending the rest of my days drinkin' Jack and smokin' buds? Self respect.

wouldn't a society of serial killers kill each other off? and a life purpose doesnt have to be the same for everybody. do you know your life purpose? it isn't to die and see jesus afterwards. everyone does that. you've got to do something while you're here. its the only definite thing we've got, this life. and p.s. so what if life were an accident? does that make any less useful? would you even know if you didnt exist? why does the face that we are here HAVE to be the work of an intelligent designer? isn't it just as likely that we've observed what happened to lead to our existence and think its too coincidental to be just luck? well, there's no way of knowing, and its useless to try. just live your life with good reason, for something you believe in. if thats god, i happen to think youre wasting it, but go right ahead, its your choice.

May I ask whether you have found such a "society of Atheists that were serial killers?"
And yes, it's all an accident.
Now, the challenge arises because we are the primates who've become conscious. Being primates, we carry with us a genetic predisposition to social behavior. Being conscious, we are aware of the effects of our behavior upon others.
Your assumption that the absence of religion in the lives of atheists leads to nihilism doesn't reflect the facts.
The fact that you've based your entire point of view on "one poster" indicates that you have been looking for anything that might support your a priori notions of what atheism is, and making your assessment prior to investigation.
Please learn something about people before you make these adolescent and self-serving assumptions.

The glaring fact that most serial killers are in fact raised in religious households ought to tell you something... Bundy, Gacy, Gein - all had religious upbringings. You wont find a society of serial killer atheists...
Yes, all life has meaning/purpose. Certainly, the life of an ant is not something you consider, as Im sure you bust out a can of Raid whenever they enter your home. But, they have "purpose" on earth to - they fill an ecological niche.
As for us humans, WE give meaning to our own lives. For some, that might be hooking up with others that gives them meaning. For others, it might be God. And for others still, it might not be God.

What is the purpose of life when you believe in God? Life and existenve is sooo random. I was born Greek. He was Born Rich or he was given the opportunities/chances to become rich. You think Atheists wonder around thinking life has no meaning? It is wrong. It is just that Atheists do not believe in some God. Humans make their fate. And our life's meaning is to live as good as possible. Just lake the religious people. I think you have gotten Atheists VERY wrong.

I don't drink alcohol, and while I do suffer from chronic depression, that's pathetic. According to that "logic," I'm just meat with eyes because I don't revel in the warmth of some deity.
In my honest opinion, the purpose of this one life I get is experience what the world has to offer. You know, travel, do spontaneous things, give back to society. I doubt it now, but maybe I will finally settle down, get married and have children.

So you are willing to judge all of us on what one answerer said? Should I use Fred Phelps to compare you against?
No one is born with meaning to their life. It is something the individual chooses to have if they desire it and some do and some don't. I find my life has great meaning, given through my family, friends, community. I love life and find it wonderful.
Oh, and perhaps you should do some research - a good number of serial killers have had religious upbringings.

There's no "universal purpose" or "great meaning".
Why would I even speculate about a "society full of atheist serial killers"? It's not going to happen. You're grasping at straws and I don't feel like playing your pathetic game.
