I'm don't believe in religion but I wanted to pose this question for those who are always attacking the religious...

Now i know about all the violence religion cause, but what about the religious who simply use it was a crutch? why attack them? Religious texts are books of myths and stories that inspire people, people do that with the X-men, star trek, star wars, battlestar galactica, LOTR, D&D and a bunch of other MORONIC stories... so if someone doesn't hurt anyone else by believing obvious fiction (beating women, war, discrimination, mixing church and state) why not just let them the groove on their beliefs?

I'd appreciate serious answers, not wise-as.s remarks

Benny Hinns hair - of course it's a crutch, I've dressed up as comic characters before, it's fun, you identify with something false, and you feel good about it. We all do it, but the bad thing is to act on it (like pretending yoru boss is Darth Vader, and stabbing them in their office) but other than that, I think if it makes them feel good they should do it

I have been a life long science fiction fan. I do not ask the public schools to teach that "life here began out there..." No do I expect law makers to create laws the way a dungeon master does.

The fact of the matter is, believing something is true when is not DOES hurt people.

People who are into science fiction, know it is FICTION duh. People who use religion as a crutch do not believe their crutch is fiction.

Religion isnt the problem the problem is mans inabilty to allow others to have a differant opinion.
That is why the same trait is apparent with athiests too. Its not about religion its about not being a control freak and allowing others to live and let live.
So every athiest who minds his own business is a true athiest he is not insisting that everyone else have his beleifs. They are in the home improvement section of yahoo answers.
The ones here are not atheists. Its not GOd there pissed off at its the facts that they are not God. Or the fact that everyone doesnt think exactly like them.
Same goes for the fundementalists who play God too.

For me personally, I care enough about people and humanity in general that I wish they wouldn't have to turn to such myths(unfortunately some have no other choice but that just reflects on how screwed up we are as humans). Religion says humans are by nature selfish and evil, well I say humans are by nature compassionate and good...we are afterall a social being, we cannot survive without echother. I think it's almost a cycle, religion causes harm that only religion itself can cure.
For example, it's like when you have a child, and you give him rules to follow, you tell him not to do something, because it's wrong(you don't tell him why it's wrong, just that it's wrong period, without any explanation) what will the kid want to do the most? he'll want to do what he is not permited to do, because by placing limits on certain things we are giving those things "value." and thats what I think religion based morality tends to do to people(its morality based on fear and authority rather than morality from compassion and empathy), it causes more harm than good...I care enough about people that I want them to open their eyes, and see the world, really truly see the world and how beautiful it and humanity can be and is!....unfortunatly some people have been screwed over so bad, and other people (many who religious) do nothing but throw bibles at them thinking it would help...

I really don't think that's the issue. Let them believe. I respect their beliefs, but their beliefs should not interfer with my life.
Afew weeks ago I an sitting in the breakroom trying to eat my lunch and two people are discussing their churches beliefs. Should I be subjected to that in the workplace just because I'm the monority? Should people be allowed to make fun of my beliefs because mine are different from theirs? Religous people are supposed to be the tolerant ones. Why does it seem as though I'm the one who tolerates them? It is alsways in my face and I resent it, but there is nothing I can do about. I just want the same respect for my beliefs as give to others.

Belief and religion are two different things. You can't compare star treck and x men to the bible. For people who attack on the reigious believers they must not know the history behind the beliefs and religion. They were sometimes not well informed or they have had traumatic events in their life which made them not believe in any higher source of help or they were raise dthat way.

I try not to "attack" those poor helpless misguided souls, but it is difficult not to feel stongly that such poor souls need guidance and a better grasp of logic, rationality and reality. This is particularly because religious beliefs tend to spread through their faithful (even an otherwise "harmless" christian or muslim can be a spreader) and not all believers in religion are harmless.

Because people are by nature self-important, and is yet tied down to the past.

Tieing all your 'faith /belief/ behavior-modification' (spaces added due to Yahoo's hippo potto monstro transalosis) to unchangable stories takes you away from the HERE-AND-NOW, making you an echo of the histories you know and yet still getting you in HERE-AND-NOW's way.

Religio-Freaks are the unfallible trees in the middle of the future's building-sites. A lot of atheists (like you) learn that it's okay to build around the annoying trees like that, but they could still go away if people realize that Jesus never died.

I don't mind ppl being religious, I wish I could believe in God too many times especially with the situation in the world being what it is today... I like to debate though just like the Christians who are here do.

Have a good day

There are no such people as "athiests." I promise you. The word is "atheist," and it is derived from the Greek word for "god," which is "theos." Look at it carefully. Notice the position of the "e." That doesn't change.

Religion doesn't cause wars. It's just a very effective way of selling it.

We don't set out to attack religion (except when someone attacks us in argument, then we counter-attack). What we don't like is someone using religion to advance their own agenda. Not when someone's doing charity work for their church, which is commendable, but when someone's selling dodgy products, getting into political office, starting wars or kicking their children out onto the street.
