Yes Trek makes Gary Fisher... the difference is all about looks and how it feels to you, as you can choose which components you want, you can make a very good bike out of any of these.

Overall, I think that both are pretty much similar in terms of quality, price and components.
Maybe the biggest difference between both brand is the geometry. Gary Fisher have what they call as the Genesys geometry (Genesisters for their women line), which overall has a longer top tube length and shorter chainstays than a standard geometry bike (like Trek).
I think that you should try them both and see how each fits you better, on which one you feel more confortable and more in control. Maybe if you have a longer torso in proportion to your legs the Genesys geometry will probably fit better than viceversa.
Just try both bikes, and make sure the bike shop sets them up properly for your body.
Good luck.

You already know Gary's are made by Trek, so since you want to do "general off road riding" I would go to my local dealer and tell them where you plan to ride. They, knowing the local trails, can best help in the selection of which bike would be the best for you and the conditions you'll be riding in.

Gary is the master. His frames are super sweet down to every last detail. If you want to support innovation and excellence in design - splash a bit more cash and ride a Fisher - they are very very bikes. The Genesister geo is worth checking, but as Roberto says - try before you buy.

Either Bike is fine, go with the one with the best components, even with general off road riding it's better to have quality components than worry about the name on the frame.

I believe that there are some minor differences in the two companies but they are essentially the same bikes. However, little differences can also make a big difference on a bicycle.

well, both are good. i have ridden a bike from both companies and i was satisfied with both of them. however, it really depends on your price range. you should go to a bike store and tell the people there what kind of riding you will do and what your price range is. they should be able to help. good luck!

Do you mean "better"? If so they are both fine bikes. It all depends on which model at what price point you're looking at.
