oh my god, i thought it was only my kids who did this, they will be sitting there, watching tele,or on the computer, and the moment they here me talking on the phone, they either start arguing with each other, screaming, and shouting "mum, will you tell him/her, or mum,i want a drink,"etc, or they'll start running around nearly breaking things, and then i have to interrupt the call by saying "will you stop that, watch what you're doing, dont do that, pack it in," but the one thing that i can gaurantee that i say every time is "why do you always start when i'm on the phone, you've been good all day" and i'm sure my friend or family member are thinking "liar, bet those kids have been like that all day, they're dead naughty" but seriously my kids can be angels, but once someones visiting or on the other end of the phone they turn hyperactive, its because they know that you wont shout at them,if you are talking to someone,so feel that they can be mischeivious and get away with it,thats why i go on yahoo answers when they go bed,at least its one conversation(as such) that wont get interrupted, lol :-)

Well ,possibly to get attention from you ?
Can it be they are attention seekers (a trait inheried from parents~possibly?)
How long are you on the phone? Why not let the kid come over & say hello to the uncle or aunty @the other end ?Maybe say hello & a few words?Usually i found this satisfied the kid & he went about his work /play or bsiness ~quietly??
Give the kid a make believe toy phone to have a "chat " with
a sibling or a parent? or grandparent! generally works like a charm as they are copying you!!

My kids do this all the time. It's the same reason they act a little bit off their rocker in the stores too. Because they know you can't yell at them. If you're on the phone, you're less likely to yell and scream at them. It's their opportunity to get away with a lot more than if you were able to scold them right away.
It's ingenius actually - they know they'll get away with it. Even if you get off the phone and yell at them, they know they had 5 to 10 minutes of mischief!

HA! Your kids do this too, huh? It must be some inert instinctual function programmed in their brains!!
Sometimes I will lock myself in the bathroom to take a call (with the kids being supervised by my mother) And naturally the boys have to use the washroom then!
I don't agree with the attention comment, because I give my kids the utmost attention and still they do this!

yup, its because your not listening they think they can do whatever they want for five minutes while your on the phone, its also because your not giving them your full attention, all my kids are grown up now but it used to drive me mad, now my grandchildren do it.
What used to really bug me was i had a cordless phone so id go into another room and they'd follow me. lol. isn't life funny
