CODEC - stands for COde / DECode is a piece of software which interprets a particular software encoding system for either audio and/or video. DivX is an example of a system which has a codec.

The reason you get an unsupported file type is because your PC doesn't have the correct codec installed for the file you downloaded. Once the proper codec is installed your computer will reconize that file type.

Depending on what FORMAT the movie is in..you may need to get a different kind of player or install codecs (COmpression / DECompression)

These are similar to drivers for devices.. when you have a certain device like usb hooking up to your computer.. sometimes windows already has the right drivers and sometimes you need to install specific ones.. this is same idea (basically) as codecs...

So if you are downloading a DiVX .avi then you may need a divx player to play them.. or you will need divx codecs for media player. It is also possible to download a non-working file in which case no player will work.

A codec is a type of compression in software. If your computer won't play the video from Limewire, then don't mess with it. It is either a corrupted file or a virus.
