I only have a vague idea of my travel plans - the idea is to be spontaneous and follow my nose. What sort of visa do I need? Surely you don't need a different visa for every country you visit?

Just to clarify, I am from the UK and on my first leg of the trip I wish to go to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Indonesia, and possibly other countries in that area.

Do you know what continents you will be on? I traveled to 18 different countries in Europe and only needed a visa for Turkey (some would point out that it is actually in Asia). But even for Turkey, you could apply for a visa at the border.

It is in countries that are hostile to Americans that you are going to find the most resistance. In South America, from what I have experienced is the same.

Where you run into problems is when you want to stay in the same country for more than 3 months or want to work there. Work visas can be a pain but I have heard of people who do it on the sly (I have no idea how risky that is).

Plus! If there is a country you want to visit and it does require a tourist visa - they will ask you for travel dates BUT this does not confine you to that time. Of all the visas I have seen, they give you a 3 month window. This gives you time to be flexible but not forced in your travel plans

some countries require visas and will NOT let you on their soil without one. generally though you can go to embassies in the country you are in and get one. its worth having a look at countries that need them and countries that you were thinking of visiting.
i know for sure that india requires a visa, if ur from the uk you will be fine in austrailia, america, europe, singapore, new zealand and most first world countries. its a different story if you want to work in places though(except illegal work ;) )

best to check the countries on your rough list, as some may also require injections or mallaria tablets(and you dont want to be somewhere for a couple of nites before you realise it a high malaria area).

you can still be spontaneous but its easier for you if you put in some ground work and be a little knowlageable to save time/money and trouble.
have a great time!!

Depending on your nationality most countries offer tourist visas on arrival. However, there are a few countries that do require you to apply in advance (sometimes months in advance).

There's a good list on The Travellers Lounge http://www.thetravellerslounge.co.uk/visas/visa.htm

This is a useful site if you want to check where you need visa:
http://skyteam.com/EN/travelPlanner/timatic/index.jsp (It has a health part too.)

There are very few countries that have joined up for visa, I only know the Schengen Countries, (Europe) for all the others you either need a visa or you do not need one.
