Melchizedek is a biblical character from Genesis 14, a king and priest of Salem who Abraham encounters while en route to Canaan. He prefigures the Levitical priesthood, and is also seen by Catholics as prefiguring the Christian apostolic priesthood, because he conducts a bread and wine ritual that bears some passing resemblence to the Eucharist.

There is a school of thought that believes that Melchizedek's name is a reference to a Canaanite deity named Zedek. But this is not known for sure.

As others stated, Melchizedek was a king of Salem (this city was later renamed Jerusalem) and a priest of the Most High. Abraham paid his tithing to Melchizedek. Melchizedek is often pointed as a archetype of Jesus.

The Mormon denominations have named their higher priesthood for Melchizedek.

IIRC, there is a sect within Mormonism which includes Melchizedek in its official name.

I would say it is the Catholic Faith because we are a Christian Faith whose priests offer bread and wine like the one who Scripture says will be a priest forever. Our bread and wine is turned into Jesus who is the eternal high priest along the order of Melchizedek

I think it has to do with the idea that Melchesidec was a christophony. That means an incarnation of Christ.

He was one "Like unto Christ". When Abraham saw Him, he fell at His feet and gave Him half of all his possessions!

Mormons believe that you can't get into heaven unless you mispronounce his name 10,000 times before you die.
