I have to admit that my microwave isn't always spot clean. But I've also observed this in public microwave ovens, such as at the office.

Nothing burns in a microwave.

A microwave oven heats food by heating the moisture in the food. Leftover crumbs either have no moisture, or they are so small that any moisture in them evaporates out of them very quickly when the oven is turned on.

Yes, it's due to the way microwaves work, different than toaster ovens. The crumbs are too small to be affected by the microwaves and the microwaves cannot heat them up enough to burn due to their tiny mass.

No because every microwave is different. If it's a very old microwave, then 23 seconds might not be long enough, but if it's a newer microwave, then that may be too much. It depends on the food, too. Density, proportions, etc.

you learn something new everyday....cause you are soooo right! never even thought about it.... all I know is that these are the same crumbs from the weekend and my son cleant eeeeevery thing in the kitchen BUT the microwave!!!!

this is because there is not a direct heat source at the crumbs so they are heated up centrally and not in the main heat zone
