A cop pulled my husband and another car over and told him he was speeding ( which he wasnt I was in the car with him) 81 in a 65. We were really confused and didnt understand why we were pulled over and he said that we were clocked by Airplane radar. First of all he pulled two cars over at once and I was told thats illegal in Ohio and I've never heard of a ticket by airplane but im sure its real since he said so. We saw no Airplanes in the sky which left us even more confused.... So is this Legal in the state of Ohio ???

Yes we can.

The "Airplane radar" is simply, Time X Distance=Speed. There were markings on the roadway that you don't normally notice set a specific distance apart. When a vehicle hits the first marker a timer starts. Then at the second marker, the timer stops and the speed is computed.

Well, if he remembered the vehicle he knew that the driver had a provisional license last night, probably had the same license tonight. Headlight still out, good enough reason to pull you over. He sees more heads than he should in the car, reasonable suspicion that a violation is occurring. He might have noticed the Kayleigh's law violation while he was driving behind you, more reasonable suspicion to pull you over. He gave you a little break the first time, only citing you for the violation to the restrictions on your license, Then he catches you again ... headlight still out and two new violations of license restrictions! This time ... hit you with everything, no mercy. It might have been smart to at least make sure you were not violating the restrictions on your license after the first stop. The tickets were all valid, and both stops were legal.

Can't say for sure about Ohio, but it happens in Cali all the time. And chances are you won't see the airplane. It isn't like it will be circling the area of the stop when you get pulled over. They are miles away by the time you get stopped.

You can fight the actual ticket (speeding) in court but saying it isn't legal/right/whatever to have 2 cars stopped at once will not earn you any respect or help in the court room. Not sure how you "know" he wasn't speeding, you have no idea when/where the plane clocked him. Unless you were staring at the speedo for the entire drive and it is certified 100% accurate, chances are your hubby is in the wrong. FYI, all our cars have their speedometers calibrated 2x a year but I have yet to meet any civilians who get theirs done ever.

Good luck & maybe have the speedometer checked. Not to mention that the angle you view it from in the passenger seat is rarely the same one the driver sees. Unless it was a digital readout, there is a good chance you saw a different speed then what was really showing because you are looking from the side and the needle is centered over the speedometer.

If that is so, the laws must have changed. I lived about a mile from the Ohio/Michigan line. On several occasions I saw as many as 6 cars pulled over at the same time because the speed limit was 10 MPH different in Mich than Ohio. One cop registered the speeds, one signaled drivers over and another passed out the tickets.

Why would it be illegal? And yes, there are planes in the sky watching drivers all the time in OH (and probably many other states, too). Why do you think the solid white lines are along the highway? They can clock you according to how fast you get from one line to the other and figure out your speed.

Take your vehicle to your car dealership and have the speedometer calibrated to make sure it is correct. I had a vehicle that was off by about 3 miles but since I drive the speed limit, was never pulled over since it was such a small amount and most officers will give you 5mph over (BUT, not all). I learned it when I drove by a sign at one of the schools here in TX that told me how fast I was going.

If your husband was keeping up with the other vehicle and the other vehicle was clocked at 81............

He can stop as many as he wants. Amazes me that both vehicles stopped. Pacing by air is very accurate. You are timed between two specific points. The time to travel from point A to point B is calculated. The plane would not have to right over your vehicle to pace you..............

Yep- I do it all the time. I've had triple and quadruple stops, too.

EDIT: Who told you this was illegal? Its not anywhere that I know of. Its more dangerous for us to pull more than 1 car at a time, but not illegal.

nope, nothing wrong with multiple cars. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because it is a potently for double the danger for one officer to handle.

There are a lot of those types of supercops on I-95 in southern Virginia.

Nothing illegal about pulling over more than one car. Why would it be?

Best bet is to just fight the ticket, not how it was given.
