I had a brilliant dog from the pound a few years ago. He was very well trained and affectionate and enjoyed playing with kids. He never snapped but barked and stayed close to me if anyone came to the door. The only thing is he molts like crazy and I am houseproud. It was on the clothes even after washing. I eventually gave him to my boyfriend's nan who really wanted him. She is 80 though and getting frail so when she can't cope with him I will be having him back.Does anyone have any idea how to stop him molting so much? I won't keep him outside because I think it's cruel and he is a house dog who loves company. He cries if I go out the door! Please help, I miss my dog and he misses me.

What are you feeding the dog? Are you brushing the coat every day - what is the breed.

If you feed a really good quality food they shed less - go to http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com and choose a god 5 or 6 star dog food. Most are available in major metro areas or over the Internet.

Dogs don't molt, they shed.

You will never completely get rid of shedding, but there are a couple things you can do to lessen it.

First, feed a high quality food. Canidae and Innova are couple good high quality foods. Stay away from anything Purina, Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba, and other store brands. These are not high quality foods and won't help the shedding.

Next daily brushing. Someone above mentioned a Furminator. This comb looks pretty good in the demos. I haven't tried one myself, I can't bring myself to spend that much for a comb. The Shed Ender comb is comparable, I have tried that and like it.

Some dogs just molt constantly! We had a retreiver cross years ago and he used to molt in huge clumps that you could just tease out with your fingers. Daily grooming aggrivated it and didn't help at all. One year he was so bad that while we were on holiday the boarding kennels took it upon themselves to groom him for us - they wished that they'd never started as he looked incredibly bedraggled by the time we got home!
We actually found that the best way to groom him was to hoover him with an attachment on the hoover whilst combing him at the same time. It didn't solve the problem, but it seemed to help - a little bit.

It is very difficult to be houseproud and own a dog.My collie leaves clumps of hair where ever he goes.He is a beautiful dog and I just put up with it has that's his only fault, also i find a miele cat and dog vacuum cleaner very good at picking up dog hair.

Keep him well brushed and keep a healthy stock of lint rollers on hand.

Feed him a high quality dog food and a Fish Oil supplement. Don't wash him too often or his skin will dry out and he'll loose even more hair.

My Jack Russell is like this. I haven't gone to the extreme of giving her away but its very hard work, I'm literally hoovering three or four times a day. Exhausting.

Theres nothing that I can do to stop her, its just her type of coat.

You do not say what race he is . First thing obviously he must be brushed or combed everyday to eliminate extra fur .He may have a deficiency. I always give my dog a veterinary product called Calcivit in Spring and Autumn as that is when they change their fur . If he is always indoors perhaps he moults more as his fur doesn't know what season it is ?

First, birds molt. Dogs shed.

Make sure he gets groomed regular.

I have also heard WONDERFUL things about the furminator, I personally have not used it, but I know many that have!

Check out ebay also, I have seen them priced inexpensive

Cool, good survey. I just tried it. You should be lucky to get a survey. And it's very cool.
