My dog has been scratching with his teeth around his back at the base of his tail recently. I have tried anti-itch shampoo and he doesn't seem to have fleas. Any ideas on how I can alleviate this? Thanks

you may want to get him checked for worms as well, but a good bath in oeatmeal based shampoo does a good job with itch. but if you are bathing often I would wait a while like a week or two. also are you getting all of the shampoo out of the fur? this can cause itching to

If this has been going on for a week or more and you've tried home remedies like an oatmeal bath without success, I'd definitely get him checked out for some sort of parasite (sometimes they are so small they are unable to be spotted by the human eye) or clogged anal glands.

If there is a bump on the skin by where the dog is scratching, it may be some sort of a skin irritation like dermatitis (my dog was licking/biting at the base of her tail and that's when I took her in and had her diagnosed).

Whatever the case may be, the doctor should be able to find something to alleviate the itching.

I would make absolutely sure it's not fleas first, because it sounds like it. Have a hunt through your dog's fur for flea dirts - you see these more often than the actual live fleas. They look like black specks, kind of comma shaped. Comb your dog with a flea comb and look at the hair on the comb for dirts. These specks also turn red when wet.

It could also be impacted anal glands, as suggested. This can cause a lot of discomfort around the back end, it's often the reasons why dogs wipe their asses on carpets and grass and stuff. At the end of the day, only a vet can actually tell you what the problem is!

My dogs do this too! My vet told me that if the dog is allergic to fleas just on flea bite can last up to two weeks:(

I would take him to the Vet just to be sure and maybe he can recommend a shampoo.

You dog can be dealing with Allergies; yes allergies.

There are new pharmecueticals that can help with this issue.

I have a Doberman Pincher who was just scratching up a storm with no fleas (Use k9 Advantix).

It was found to be an allergy.

Post treatment, no more scratching.

I hope this helps you.

If you don't know how, have any groomer check his anal glands first.
