was this the equivalent of going to visit the sick and the elderly in nursing homes?

I don't think so. I think it was a sign of Christ's divinity, since the angels serve God. (But I could be wrong.)
Corporal works of mercy that we do as humans are part of the good works we need to do as Christians

No. Jesus was preparing for the final stage in giving up his earthbound identity and fulfilling his true purpose and mission, that would insure that his insight and vision into the nature of being and reality would be transmitted to the broader world. We each need such 'an angel' to support our ego transcendence and fulfillment of a larger purpose in this life.

Showing compassion for souls near death so that they leave feeling loved, is something entirely different.

I do know that four different times Jesus pled with God not to be sacrificed. God never answered. However, the very action of pleading to be relieved of this burden absolutely proves that Jesus did not give his life willingly.

No, not at all. Angels are spiritual thoughts or ideas from God to us. God was comforting Jesus in His hour of need. God had to have been reminding His son that he was not alone.
