Good - Carbon dioxide is a raw material for photosynthesis. Food webs rely on photosynthesis to trap the sun's energy and get everything started.

Bad - Excess carbon dioxide is a contributor to global warming. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. We need greenhouse gases to keep Earth from being starkly cold at night, but too much greenhouse gas can be like having too many blankets. Some heat needs to escape or we'll get too hot.
