Satan is the accuser -- he has no power of his own. He simply points out our sins to God. A guilty conscience maybe?

Satan was a necessary consequence of the developing idea of an afterlife. That afterlife developed out of a perception that life is not as fair as one would hope.

Originally, death was death. Everyone who died ended up in a universal "grave" ("sheol" in Hebrew) where nothing much happened. Judaism developed a notion that God is just with all his people. Those who follow his Law will be rewarded with long life and many children, while the disobedient will die and lose their heritage. Only it didn't happen that way. Too many good people died young and childless and too many bad people lived a long, happy life and established dynasties. Doubt was sewn.

At first, Satan appeared as a skeptic, a foil to challenge God's assertions of justice. The Book of Job shows Satan coming and going freely into God's courts. Satan challenges God to disprove that Job is loyal because his life is full of blessings instead of the other way around. The book doesn't end well and Satan is written out after the first few chapters, but the point is made. God does not appear to treat people equally, at least not in this life.

After the Babylonian Exile, Jews were exposed to foreign philosophical ideas, including the Greek notion of a "soul" independent of the body. If there is something that exists without the body, then it could survive death. That would mean there is an existence beyond death AND an opportunity for God to right the injustices of the previous life.

But that would mean some would be rewarded and others punished. They would have to be separated so that one treatment would not interfere with the other. These separate realms would have to be administered somehow, and the all-good God could not preside over a torture chamber. So they gave "Satan" the job. He's obviously interested only in making God look bad so "prince of evil" is a nice fit for him. By an easy extension, he would be interested in drumming up business, so he would naturally extend his testing skills to the general population, encouraging all kinds of sin and thus, more candidates for hell.

But since God created everything and everything created was good, Satan's existence was hard to explain. The solution was to make Satan an angel (to give him the necessary supernatural powers), then make him so good that he became proud and lost his sense of place, becoming a rival of God and therefore evil. There would be a fight and Satan would lose. He's still technically an "angel" but a discredited one.

Satan is NOT "the anti-christ". The term "anti-christ" appears only in the letters of John and refers to anyone who denies that Jesus was the Messiah. Perhaps you mean the "Beast" of Revelation, who is clearly a worldy, human power of some kind. Satan may be roving around tempting this "Beast" to do its worst, but he wouldn't be given direct control of people as this would violate their free will.

Hell is a problem. If one has no corporeal body, how is one tortured? Some suggest a supernatural body of some kind that is able to feel some kind of psychic pain without getting accustomed to it. Others say the torment is self-inflicted isolation, an existential withdrawal from all relationship into the empty self. It's hard to imagine a sufficiently convincing spiritual anguish. So images of fire and old-fashioned torture devices are substituted to give a visceral equivalent. Don't take it literally.

Cynics will point to the development and say it's obviously all made up. Believers will say it is a gradual realization of what was always true. What you say is up to you.

Sorry, that's classified on a need to know basis. We can't tell you the inner secrets of the initiates. It's like asking a scientist what's the unified field theory and what does quantum physics mean, most of them don't know. Some think they do. Maybe they do. Obviously God is the unified field theory of spirituality. You either accept science, much on faith, or study it. Besides, spirituality is a sensitive issue, a lot of infighting and pressure from the outside. It's kind of passed on privately one on one. Science, half practiced is a left brain activity and the right brain, our spiritual side is another world, another perspective. You can only see from there. It's like two eyes with slightly different perspectives. If you integrate their two reports you have depth perception. The two hemipheres of the brain see two sides of every issue, while we tend to pick a side, only see one, except the religious are often stuck in the left brain also and don't know. You have to do your homework. Common sense, however, tells you that Job was headed for a fall. Caused by cause and effect. He was out of sync instead of nsync. We have been given dominion over the earth. We're co-creators and if we don't work together things are going to hell in a handbasket. Satan's pretty much hell bent to do it his way, as are we, without regard to social, physical, personal, and emotional laws, as unbreakable as the laws of physice, without consequences. We all seem to be his disciples, wouldn't you say? He is still and angel, like you, and all the worse for not doing more. We don't really like to have someone around who breaks our hearts at every turn, do we? I mean we're not talking children here. Someone robing you blind. I wouldn't trust them much. Hell is pretty much what we are making of things down here, which we would repeat wherever we went. Something similar to that. Reality is an allegory also, just as history contains the some of best lessons, as it real. As I said the left brain can't see, since it only uses the five senses and leaves out the sensor, the mind, the scientist. We have to observe the observer, as we're definitely in the picture. That's why all sacred writings were from dreams, visions and intuition. The left brain works at five bytes a second, the right at five megabytes, not to mention that a picture's worth a thousand words. That's a million to one. So's the answer, but given enough time it will evolve.

satan was the most beautiful angel in heaven and he knew this thus boasting and becoming more and more vain each day.when his vanity became too much for god to stand satan challenged him by proclaiming his superiority over god and thus causing his damnation.as far as standing for anything he only loves himself with no other cause than himself.Satan still is technically an angel. but, more specifically a fallen angel. he is not technically the antichrist either, he just influences the birth of the unholy-one(anti-christ). the anti-christ will have deciples when he arises to power. and finally many theologist have discussed the exact "State" of hell but it is believed that your most feared situation is real in this cursed state, e.g. satan's hell would be disfigurement by fire thus hell has been depicted as a firey place. thank you for your time.

The word 'satan' is the Hebrew transliteration of the word 'adversary.' Therefore, Satan is the one who opposes God. Satan, is the most powerful of the fallen angels. Satan, also known as Lucifer and the Devil, is said to be the one who entered the Garden of Eden and convinced Eve to disobey God. There is debate among scholars regarding the time of the fall of Satan. Some say that he fell when he moved Eve to disobey God. Others state that Satan fell sometime before that and merely manifested his adversarial nature in the Garden. Still others say that there was a great battle in heaven long before the Garden of Eden and that Satan took one third of the angels with him.

Hell

Hell is one of those subjects that makes people uncomfortable. We hear stories of hell being a place of fire, demons, and endless torment. Throughout history many authors have written about it, Dante's Inferno for example. Western culture is very familiar with the concept. Even Hollywood has made it the subject of many movies. Whatever the context, whatever the belief, hell is definitely taught in the Bible. But even the doctrine of hell is not without its controversy. Some say it is only the grave with no consciousness. Others say it is a place of correction and punishment that is not eternal. Others say it is an endless agonizing punishment in fire. Whichever it is, hell is the total absence of the favor of God.

Is Hell Eternal?

The teaching that there is an eternal hell in which hordes of mankind will suffer eternal punishment can be a difficult doctrine to accept. We hear so much about God's infinite love and how He desires that all men be saved (1 Tim. 2:4). However, those who develop their theologies based upon the "gentle" side of God do so with an incomplete picture. Not only is God loving (1 John 4:8-10), gracious (Exo. 33:19; 1 Pet. 2:3), and merciful (Exodus 34:6; Psalm 67:1; James 5:11), but He is also holy (Isaiah 6:3; Rev. 4:8), just ( Neh. 9:32-33; 2 Thess. 1:6), and hates sin (Psalm 5:5-6; Hab. 1:13). God punishes the sinner (Jer. 50:31; Ez. 44:12; Matt. 25:46; 2 Thess. 1:9; 2 Pet. 2:9; Heb. 10:29).
The Bible teaches that there is a fiery hell, a place that Jesus warned people about.

Hell is believed to be eternal damnation for your sins. Satan is believed to be the ruler of Hell. Yes Satan is also known as Lucifer, The Devil, Be'ezlebub and probably some other names. He was a servant to God until he disobeyed him then God cast Lucifer down out of Heaven for his disobediance. That made Satan despise God. So in turn he became God's adversary and later the Anti-Christ (after God's son - Jesus Christ). It is believed that God and Satan are at constant war and that they are fighting for our souls. That is the battle between good and evil. I am not a Christian or Catholic or any sort of religious person, I am Agnostic and believe that our spirit goes somewhere but it is not God's or Satan's to take.

Satan started out as an angel ion heaven he was in charge over music and he thought that that he was higher, more powerful than God so he had followers (other angels) believing the same thing so God kicked him out and into hell and the fellow angels became demons. Read the book of revalations to get a clearer picture of hell.

Satan was the first angel made by God. For a while he was good, but as the time was passing jelaousy overtok him. He tought that he has the right to be more loved than other angels because he was the first Gods creation. But God treated him equal as the others. So jelaousy became hate pointed to his Creator. He led on some of the other angels to hate God too, and started a war. War he lost in. God banished him for ever, together with angels who folowed him. The place Satan setlled in is Hell, and it is comletly cutted of Gods devine love, there for destend to disapper. Source of sustaing fire of hell are human souls - the ones who gave up on God, and will go to hell after Judgement day. So Satan was yus one jelaous angel who made mess in Haven. He has right to fight for human souls with all means, but its up to people. It would realy help if you read a Bible or some other litherature, but be weare cause there is a lot of cults that ofer logic and sweat story, to which if you bit, youre lost. Good luck with your research...

Satan, whose actual name is Lucifer was "the bright and morning star", the most beautiful of angels.

He rebelled against God, started a war and took 1/3 of the angels with him when he was cast out of heaven (thus, his followers went from angels to demons).

Satan is NOT the anti-christ.

Hell is eternal separation from God....as for what that looks like, I do NOT want to know.

Satan is known by many names - Lucifer (Light bearer), Beelzebul (Lord of the Flies), the Devil, the Evil One. Satan does mean adversary in Hebrew, however, Jesus used the word as a proper name for example:

"You are like your father, Satan, who from the beginning was a liar and a murderer."

The disciples reported seeing a vision of Satan falling to earth like lightning.

The book of Revelation describes a heavenly battle in which Satan is cast out of heaven. Why? Many theologians think it was because of his pride. He refused to worship Jesus. Because he, like us, had free will, there could be no excuse for his disobedience. He is punished eternally. Mankind was deceived by Satan into disobeying God, we too are punished but God sent Jesus to repair the damage and save us.

Satan stands for evil. His sole purpose is to try to lead humanity astray. He is not the Anti-Christ that is mentioned in the Bible. That person will be a man who will cooperate with Satan to deceive and pervert the message of salvation.

Hell is generally described as a place of suffering. Jesus taught it is a place where "the worm never dies, and the fire does not go out." He often used the aramaic word Ghenna to refer to hell. This was a garbage dump outside of Jerusalem that burned constantly. Jesus also called hell "outer darkness" and said in hell there would be "weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Mystics who have seen Hell, have described it as a place of torment where souls burn in fire but are not consumed.
