The lenses darken in the sun, they are bifocals as well, but the prescriptions for reading and distance are both fairly weak at +1.25 and -.5

Too expensive. I buy progressive Transitions from Costco for about $100 plus the cost of the frames.

You didn't say if it was a lined bifocal or a no-line progressive. Bifocal lenses average around $100 + $100 for transition= $200. No-line, add another $100=$300. That does not include frame. This is the average price in America. I know that things are usually more in Canada. If the lenses are no-lines, the prices can vary depending on the brand of lenses used. It is possible to add another $50-$100 for top of the line lenses.

It all depends on the quality. high quality lenses can cost up to $700, but that's the top of the line. If you go to costco and buy $100 you're not going to get the best quality.

When you buy higher index lenses and add an anti-reflective coating the cost can easily reach $500, but what you're getting is very high quality. t all depends on how important you're glasses are to you.

Also, take into consideration the kind of warranty and service you get. From my years in the optical business, one thing that I learned was how important a warranty is. If you break or lose your glasses you need to know that doctor's office will help you.

If you are really just a mild hyperope, just go buy some over the counter +1.25 readers. Should work just fine.

At Costco, a pair of bifocals is about $160.00 in California. Trifocals too. Dark trifocals too.

Why the huge markup there?

It does seem pricey but there are a number of things you can do.

I have really crappy insurance, but I am a AAA member (auto insurance) They offer deals with being a member that are better than I get from my insurance company.

Do you have AAA in Canada?
