why is baby bell wrapped in that red waxy stuff

the wax seals the cheese to prevent spoilage and helps it in shipping.
Jams and jellies are often sealed with wax in home canning
the metal lids are very expensive. and not reuseable..

Most cheese when it is made is wrapped in that waxy stuff Baby Bell is just a smaller version.

it helps maintain the freshness of it... at least they make it so it's easy to unwrap the wax.
