I purchased a Model 710 .300 Win Mag, took it out one time and the damn magazine clip broke off. I noticed that the new 770 has a much better retaining clip to hold the magazine in. Does anyone know if it is interchangeable with a 710 or is Remington manufacturing a better replacement part for the 710?
While I'm at it, my 710's bolt action is very difficult to unlock (when I discharge a spent casing) and again to lock back in (to fire) - any remedies or ideas? I don't want to ground or file the wrong piece or at all if I can help it.
Thanks in advance!

I would contact Remington and see if the mags are interchangeable and while you have them on the phone ask about the bolt being hard to open and close they may very well have you sent it back for repairs at no cost to you
any way here is a link to their contact info

remington's most famous and accurate action is the 700. It is what the USMC sniper rifles are built on. Of course, the action is heavily modified, then a custom barrel, stock, and trigger are put on. Remington made a slew of different types of 700, varying in finish and stock type, including the humble ADL, which was their economy rifle, but at it's heart it was still a 700. Now, Remington could make an ADL 700 for about $400, and sell them for about $500 for a nice 100 profit. Then walmart approached Remington, and soon walmart was carrying Remington Rifles. Well, walmart is always trying to be cheapest, so they started selling the ADL at $450, only a 50 profit. So they pressured Remington to make a cheaper version. Remington couldn't. So Walmart arranged to have some gunmaking machines from china brought in, and designed the Remington 710, and had remington stamp their name on it. A 710 could be made for $200, half as much as a 700 ADL. Walmart could sell the 710 for $400 and make 4 TIMES the profit as the old ADL. But the gun was absolute junk. People bought it because it said Remington, but it was really chinese knockoff made on chinese machines sitting in a wharehouse someplace in the USA. It was so bad that people started getting really pissed at Remington, and Remington told walmart they were scrapping all the remaining 710s before Remington's reputation was ruined. Walmart threatened to sue, Remington countered 'fine, you can sue and destroy us, but what do you gain? no one will ever buy your Remington 710 again. Will you cut your nose off to spite your face?' So a deal was struck. Remington would make a different cheap bolt action gun, but something that was a lot better. This is the Remington 770. ADL 700 cost about $400 to build, the 710 cost about $200, and the 770 cost about $300, so selling it for $400 walmart still made a better profit than on the 700 ADL. The 770 is not bad. If you are not getting a custom remington 700, then it doesn't really matter what kind of bolt action gun you get, be it Remington, Ruger, CZ, Browning, whatever. A standard reminton 700 SPS or whatever will be as close to a custom built rifle using a 700 action as a Ruger 77 is to the same custom built rifle. If you really want to be a USMC sniper, spend the money on getting actual firearms training. Look to the 'Civilian Marksmanship Program' and their competition shooting, look to 4-H, check with your local gun clubs. Then buy a CZ 452 lux 22LR bolt action rifle and start trying to hit a penny 9 times out of 10 at 25 yards. When you can do that, move back to 50 yards. Buy your ammo by the brick, the only way you get good is through good instuction and trigger time. The type of gun you practice with is basically irrelevant. NOTE dollar value chosen to reflect today's dollar.

Remington 710 Magazine Latch

Your Remington 770 Rifle is an "Upgrade" and not a replacement for the Older Remington 710 series Rifles.
According to my Remington factory schematics your 770 magazine latch is manufactured stronger than it was on the 710. It can be replaced but should be done either by the Remington Factory Service Dept, or thru a Remington Authorized Factory Repair Center Gunsmith, in your area.

With problems you are having , check online on Remington's website, fill out the Service Request Form, and they will help you arrange free warranty replacement parts and labor as well as fix any problems you have with your gun's safety. You will VOID any warranty if you attempt to file or grind anything...

Remington will have repair stations in most areas of the country. Pull up their web site and they should have a list of them. Take it and all the papers that came with the gun especially the sales slip to the store that you bought it from (if that is Walmart then forget it) The gun store should send it to the repair station for you. If they want your business they will not even charge you for the service.
