Lots of cuddling! Head elevated if possible - because lying flat usually causes pressure in the ears. I would have my kids lay on the couch or recliner to keep their head up a little.
A hot water bottle or hot towel can cause some comfort too. And of course, tylenol.
Best of luck! My oldest had them every couple months for the first 3 years of his life, then they just went away.

I'm not sure what calpol is and I'm assuming that's why no one has suggested childrens motrin...... mainly because I don't know what kind ear infections the other people had, but mine, were damn painful and if you'd try to put cotton balls in an infected and painful area..... I'd have to wonder what the hell are you thinking. I had ear infection A LOT when little and my son is following in my footsteps and I wouldn't dream of doing anything other than motrin or numbing drops.

My grand daughter almost went deaf. The second doctor(or should I say FIRST doctor) had tubes placed in the ear to drain fluids.
Get a second opinion if the infection continues.

Give him a warm 'hot' water bottle, and lots of cuddles.
