My two cats were spayed and front declawed two days ago. Since I brought them home, they have been hissing and spitting at each other. They used to be best friends!!! Should I give them a few days to calm down, or call the vet????

Give them a few days to calm down. Cats recognize each other by smell and right now, they both smell like the vet's office, which now as a very negative association for them. I guess you could say that they don't know where their friend is, even though they're right there with each other.

They're also pretty sore, having gone through two surgeries. The declawing may have something to do with it as well, but what's done is done, so I won't say anything more about that. Just give them some TLC, time away from each other and let their bodies recover. Cats hate change and this is a big change for them, but they can adapt and adjust. Time, love and patience are the keys here.

If this is still going on in a month's time, that's when you may want to call the vet and see if there's some behavioral medications that can be used. But I feel it's best to avoid that as much as possible.

Don't be to alarmed, its very common for cats to act this way. They have been through a lot are probably very irritable The other thing that other have already mentioned is that they have picked up other scents from the vet. They don't trust other cats the smell different, hence the fighting and hissing.

My cats are best buds and sleep together on my bed at night. But when I have to take one, or both of them to the vet, and come home, they act as if they don't even know each other and display the actions your are describing, Hissing, fighting, etc.

Just give them a couple of days, and everything will be back to normal. After the recovery, and especially the longer they are picking up the familiar scents from your house, they will be back to being best buds!!!

It is a couple of differant factors. They don't feel good and are hurting I am sure...that will take about a week...and when a cat doesn't feel good they usually want to be left completely alone with no one or no other cat in their space.

Also cats have an incredible smeller and can smell and sense when things are differant. The cats each probably smell like the vets office and all the disenfectants that they use during surgery. Also their entire hormone base has changed and that will also change their smell to each other.

They will need about a week or two before getting back to their old selves. This is perfectly normal and so don't worry about it. Just give them some time.

I should have my response as a cut and paste, as what you are seeing is so common. They have the dreaded 'vet' scent on them, and they do not recognize each other, since their normal scents are overwhelmed by the vet smell. It will fade in a day or so. In the meantime, you can take a towel, and rub each of them with the same towel, transferring the scents so they think they smell the same. If that doesn't work, then take a dab of vanilla and place it above their nose and at the base of their tail. They will think they each smell the same.

Perhaps by the time you read this, most of the hostility has eased. It usually lasts a day or so.

Female cats appear to be ordinarily tremendously competitive closer to one a further. Also the strain would be brought about by way of cats invading their territory, as feminine cats are in most cases VERY territorial. You as a rule must name the animal manipulate to take away the outside cats seeing that I feel that it's as a rule whats inflicting the obstacle. The cats are combating badly and injuring every different, you must separate them to preclude prime vet fees and injured in soreness cats. They are annoyed and in addition kittens as soon as grown up ordinarily appear to fail to remember who their mom was once and start to compete along with her over love, area, and dominance like another random cat. Do now not permit persons to tease and harass the cats, as this will likely reason them much more frustration. Give them separate meals bowls and every their possess clutter field, then permit them touch most effective by way of cat companies or supervision. Also within the rooms while they're separated placed anything the opposite cat sleeps on in there in order that the cat will likely be in a position to sniff the opposite one at the same time now not being in a position to damage it, which would possibly support. Also provide the cats tons of affection an awareness. Give the cats their possess toys and for those who see them combating at the same time supervising them, you may also desire to clap loudly and startle them. I in most cases don't advise interfering with fights however they're hurting every different so that you can't allow them to feel its alright to battle with one a further. And as I stated, attempt to uncover a method to eliminate the strays, they're as a rule inflicting a number of the damage. Good success and allow me know the way it is going!

The pain they endured and still enduring is probably causing them to get aggrevated with one another. They'll be fine. It's like if you were in a car accident, or injured, and the pain was overwhelming, you might get moody from it. It's normal. After they heal, and feel better without any pain, they will be best friends again! :-)
