I read about some baseball player who said he didn't believe dinosaurs ever existed, because they weren't mentioned in the bible... Is this a religious thing, or a stupid thing? Also... are there really people who think the earth is only 6000 years old, depsite the preponderance of evidence contrary to it?

Unfortunately there are indeed many people who believe that the earth is only about 6000 years old, even though the Bible does not say any such thing. It comes from a misunderstanding of the first couple chapters of Genesis and that the Bible does not give much history before that time.

But there are indications, even in the Bible, that the earth is much older than 6000 years. But belief or disbelief in this is not an issue of faith. From the perspective of the Bible (read, 'God'), it is simply not important. The Bible doesn't mention a lot of things; that doesn't make them non-existent, just not too important (on the other hand, the Bible DOES mention things that most people think it doesn't; and yet they ignore these).

So, this whole issue falls under the category of "vain disputes":
2 Timothy 2:23 -- But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
It can be interesting to discuss, and even to study, but it is NOT an issue of faith or salvation.

In all fairness all Christians do not believe the Bible teaches the earth is 6000 thousand years old. There is no verse or verses to say that. This theory needs to be called the Divine Deception Theory, because that is what it is. God makes it look like the earth is millions of years old and then it really is only 6000? What would you call it?
There is many stupid people who say stupid things. Ignore it. If they are that crazy reason and facts will have no effect.

I don't think they mentioned 'Bears' in the bible. They exist. There is a doctrine called Young Earth Creationism where they believe the earth is 6000-10000 years old. They do not deny the existence of dinosaurs, but believe they were killed of in the flood.

Nowadays, most baseball players are plucked from South and Central American countries where backward Christian beliefs rule. Religion in these countries is comparable to what you would find in Europe in the middle ages. In other words, it's the epitome of ignorance. You should get on a plane with average South Americans and see how they all pray and make the sign of the cross when the plane lands (as if engineering and maintenance had nothing to do with it.)

The level of superstition is laughable.

Bible literalism goes to far, and the opposite metaphorical view of it is not well thought out.

The bad thing is most, if not all young earth and creationist claims against accepted science have been refuted and debunked many times, but yet they are still regurgitated.

You don't "believe" in facts, you research, verify and validate them - belief plays no part in it.

Oh well, baseball also isn't mentioned in the Bible, so I doubt that it actually exists either. And to your last question, are there really people who believe this ****, the amazing answer is "Yes". Hell, there are days when I feel older than that!

Asking "is it a religious thing or a stupid thing" is redundant.
Anyone who honestly believes that the earth is 6000 years old is not someone you want in your life. Ever.

It's a religious thing, and a stupid thing.

They tend to be attached at the hip sometimes.
