Go to your local animal shelter and look around. If one catches your eye, ask to play with it and get to know it.

You'll get a lifetime friend and save a life!!

It really depends on your personal preference. I would definitely recommend a mutt rather than a purebred, as purebreds often come from puppy mills and are much more expensive. I would also recommend rescuing (ie, going to a human society or no kill shelter).
When looking for a prominent breed in your mutt, you will want to think of what kind of behavior you like. Labradors tend to be a little calmer and easier to train (many people will say Labs and Golden Retrievers are the best for kids and new dog owners). If you want a dog that will run or do rigorous outside activities with you, stay away from German Shepards because they will often have arthritis or hip displasia. Border Collies are type A personality, and take CONSTANT attention - they like to be busy 24/7 and don't want to sit around the house for an extended period of time.
What kind of space do you have? If you live in an apartment or a house with a small yard, you will want to think of getting a terrier or other small or medium breed. Anything over forty pounds will need a larger area.
Despite what people say, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Dobermans are NOT automatically aggressive, but all three breeds need to be socialized regularly to keep them from becoming so.
I personally have a prominently Lab/Pit mix, and he is the sweetest dog we've ever owned. Our German Shepard/Rotty mix is sweet to us, but highly protective - she can be highly aggressive to people she doesn't like. She also has hip displasia.
In the end, it really settles on the dog that you find that you truly connect with. Go with your gut when you're looking at them - and you'll know when you fall in love.

This question has too many unanswered questions to really give you any advice:

What size do you want?
Do you have the time to spend grooming each day or do you want a short coated dog that will take less brushing?
Do you want a very active dog that will need a lot of exercise or do you want a dog that will curl up with you and cuddle?
Do you want a working dog, such as a hunting dog, or more of a pet?

These are all things you need to think about. You may also find a trip to the local shelter beneficial, as you may suddenly see a dog that is just right for you.

Get your dog from an animal shelter or an animal rescue organization. You will probably save it's live as well as get a wonderful friend. Of course no one can tell you what is best for you. Research the different breeds since temperment will vary. There are many dog rescue organizations on the internet. Here is one - http://www.terrificpets.com/dog_rescue/

Good luck!

I have had dogs growing up all my life. We originally had poodles, but they can be very aggressive at times and use too much caution when their owner meets with strangers, i.e. answering the door..... About 10 years ago, my parents got a Yorkie. They are such a delight and so smart. After that Yorkie died, they got another one and it was the same way, smart, loveable, loyal, etc. I just bought a Yorkie puppy for myself, and wouldn't part with her for a million dollars. She is absolutely adorable, smart, loyal and likes to "give kisses". That is the only dog I would recommend.

If you need a large dog for a gaurd dog, get a boxer or bull mastiff. They are good family pets. If you want a dog for the kids get a lab. If you want something small go for a poodle or beagle.

It MUST be a personal choice. Dogs are not toys.

My advice is to think about what you want in a dog, and what your own personality is, and try to find a breed with that match.

You can do a search online, or go to your local library and take out books and research that way.

Good luck

I would go to AKC website or Dogbreedinfo.com and check out breeds.
dogbreedinfo.com, has a test you can take, depending on your answer, they will give you a list of breeds

I would check on both website about the breeds, and then decided what breed is good for you

good luck

I am not saying to buy a puppy over the internet, I would say not to that. You can fine information about different breeds, and then look for a puppy. I would not buy I puppy, I could not see myself
