All children develop differently. My daughter spoke almost from the day she was born -- she hasn't stopped talking since. But she didn't even crawl until she was almost 2. Once she did she almost immediately walked.

At the time my Pediatrician told me that some children focus on either their verbal or motor skills first while others do a bit of both at the same time.

Well my son just turned 3 and he's just now starting to really talk. Before he was just saying things like eat and tea and mama and Nana. Now he is telling me what the animals say and naming them. He is starting to say 2-3 word phrases also. My daughter was a lot different. She was talking big word by age 3. They are all different. I would take the child to the doctor. Sometimes there is a hearing problem and sometimes a speech problem. He may just need mommy and daddy to work with him more with words. I'd do snake sounds and ruff like a dog to get the r sound. If he gets where he's more confident in himself he may talk more.

Its definitely on the low end. Things to check first would be hearing and do the parents or that someone actively engages him in speaking - for example a neglected child might not speak, so might an overly spoiled that has no reason too. Now the hard part is bringing it up to your friend.

You're right that every child is different. My son was cooing and making noises like crazy at 6-7 months. He said his first words at 9 months. He was talking complete sentences by 1 yr. We read to him all the time, and my Mom and I were both teachers, and I really think that had a lot to do with his advanced speech and other things. The Dr. know what they're talking about when they say to read to your baby!

every child is different but by two they should have a vocabulary of at least 200 words and be speaking in 2-3 word sentances! She should contact the state to see if they have any free programs regarding speech! Most states offer the birth to tree program which is free untill teir third b-day! She should def get it checked it could be serious or it could be that the child just needs help getting the words out!

Im guessing its normal. I watch abour 5 2 year olds and my daughter is the only one that can talk, and I mean she can hold a converstation. All of the other kids can't say hardly anything. They can say the basics like mommy and daddy and bye bye, eat. Some of them can't even say any of that. So yeah, I guess its normal.

Yep normal especially for a boy. As you said they all develop differently. My son never said anything except mama dad and truck till he was three. Literally and then one day he just started talking in complete sentences. Everyone told me he was autistic or had speech problems, but now he is a perfect normal 5 year old. She can get him screened if she is concerned but if she isn't then I would just give it time.

girls learn quicker then little boys at that age.. but every child is different.. my son didnt start talking to me much until he was 2 and a half. My friend's son was talking very well before age two though. it's just different for every kid.

tell your friend to start talking to him in the car.. point out everything and talk to him about it... my son started talking a lot more when i did this.

as long as he has some functional language its likely he's fine. Does he understand when you speak to him? If you say "find the doggy" will he do it? Does he look at you when you call his name? These are important developmental markers, which are much more indicative of a problem than a language delay. If he does not do these things your friend may want to get an eval done to rule out autism
