Can you really afford NOT to tithe, that is the question. Many people, Christians included, want to say that tithing went out with the old law and that Christ did away with the law. But I might remind you that in Gen.14:10, tithing was a covenant instituted by Abram. It was never a part of the law. Also, in Malachi, God lists all of the benefits of being in covenant with Him and all that He will do and provide as a part of that covenant. It says in chapter 3 that He will rebuke the devourer (satan) for your sake when you tithe, and He will keep the fruit of your vine from being destroyed, and He will open the windows of Heaven and pour you out a blessing that you wont have room to receive! And when we don't tithe, it says we are cursed with a curse and the enemy has free reign in your finances, in your health and in any other open doors you may have in your life. We rob God when we don't offer him a tenth of our earnings, a tenth of our time and at least a tenth of our lives! The blessings start with our tithing, but our offering (sacrifices) bring the blessings in triple-fold!
Many times we think of blessings in terms of money. But it is a blessing to have peace of mind and be stress free. We need to get our priorities straight and do it God's way. Jesus said if you love me, you'll keep my commandments, and they are to love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength, to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, and to love our enemies. When we can do that, everything else takes care of itself.
I might also add that if you trust God, as a part of the covenant relationship you have with Him, He will provide your every need, including retirement income, a new car, and money to send your wife home each year. Trust Him and you can ask and receive all that He has for you. Don't let the enemy of your soul rob you with doubt and fear. Trust God today and make up in your mind to tithe and be faithful to Him first. He will NEVER let you down.

Strict "tithing" is legalistic. Take care of your family's basic needs first, and that of course also means prudent saving for the future. Make an offering with what remains; sometimes it will not be a great amount, but neither was the widow's mite. When you have more, give more. You can give sacrifically by not indulging your "wants" (by passing on eating at restaurants, for example, and putting the money thus saved aside for an offering), but if you don't address your needs you will soon have nothing to give.

You can not afford to. But, God does say to be a cheerful giver. 10% is not very much, when you look at how much God has already blessed you with. You also have to remember, God owns everything anyway. Nothing is truly yours. You may work for it, but isn't it God who gives you the strength to be able to work? My husband is a pastor. So I know firsthand about tithing. There is about 95 members at the church. They are not good tithers. But, they would wish that my husband not work another job, so that he could be at their dispense at all times. It's not gonna happen. We are a family of 5, so he must work an outside job to provide, since the people refuse to pay their tithes. Tithing is important, not just for the pastors to get a paycheck, but also, do you think the light bills and water bills pay themselves at the church? The measly dollar in the offering plate does not do it anymore. So, yes to your answer, you can afford to tithe. You just have to be willing to make the sacrifice. Remember the woman who gave of her very living? Jesus said she gave more than all the rest. Do not be one of the rest!

God does intend for you to take care of your family. How much more money do you think you will have if you tithe. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6:38. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. Malachi 3:10

You cannot afford not to tithe.
Malachi 3:8 says " Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, How do we rob you?
in tithes and offerings"
Believe me , if you stay faithful and tithe, God will take care of you. sometimes i dont have enough money, but i tithe anyways, and God has always taken care of me. He helped my family get a car once. all you have to do is give 10 percent, that is all He is asking for.

Tithing is important. If you pay it with faith, God will provide for you. Maybe you should also look at the costs for other things you purchase that aren't necessary
You should also pay it first before anything else. and it should be 1/10 of what you make in gross. because tithe means tenth part

I know what you mean, I don't make much but I still tithe. Forgive me for quoting scripture but in 2nd Corinthians it says:
he who sows sparingly and grudgingly will also reap sparingly and grudgingly, and he who sows generously will also reap generously and with blessings.
Let each one give as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver (whose heart is in his giving).
So if you do tithe, do it with a cheerful heart, knowing that God will bless you in the future. It may be hard to imagine getting more by giving away. It's a leap of faith you have to take and that God wants you to take. My preacher said to give happily or don't give at all.

You shouldn't have to give up your needs in order to tithe, but you have to be sure to distinguish between needs and wants.
