Non-Christians: Not the time to answer - I'm looking to find out what THEY think. As such, since you do not fall under the category it goes beyond the scope of the question.]

Personally I love his writings. "The Ascent to Truth" changed my outlook greatly. He opened up my mind to so many things I had never thought of. I think that labeling him a "heretic" is very narrow-minded and puts limitations on the God who is the Limitless One. I try to live my life by this famous Merton quote:

"Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony."

Amen.

Who can one be Wise or even a genius if he does not know God? Paul was wise and enlightened and wrote most of the books of the Bible. He was a genius also. He spoke with clarity.

This man you speak of I am sure he was a author of man books. I know you are saying many books. Apparently these books where just for men due to their religious and mysticism content. The world might have said he is a genius. But the Christian say that he is a heretic. Many may have thought he was wise and enlightening but that is a matter of ones own opinion. When you know nothing you can see nothing. Thomas Merton had no sight. Occult like teaching. It was beyond understanding. Wisdom is Proverbs 8.

No. numerous the Founding Fathers have been Deists, not Christians. Deists have faith that a extra robust capability created the universe, then stepped away. In different words, there are no regulations surpassed out via the preferrred being, and there is not any Bible. Deism is a a ways cry from Christianity. the recent international grew to become into all approximately non secular freedom, which means there is not any professional faith. era.

I think he pushed the Church's envelope but that is a good thing. Merton was a very wise and deeply spiritual man, based on the things by him I have read.

I don't think that anyone outside the Roman Catholic church has heard of him, or has paid him any mind.

I gather that most of the Christians on here are from the U.S., and are therefore most likely Protestant. I don't think that you will get many answers.
