The only real "Bible thumper" I've ever seen are the JWs. They go door-to-door and try to convince people they are right in their cult.
I've never known a Christian to do this, however. And while I'm a well-grounded, Bible-believing Christian, I rarely quote scripture and never force my views on others. I simply believe the fundamental Biblical truths and live my life accordingly, allowing those around me to live as THEY choose.

In almost the exact same terms as an Origin of the Species thumper -- only with MUCH holier adjectives and considerably more respect !!

The term comes from a peculiar noise which was popularized among Revivalist preachers in the early 1800's here in America. Somehow they got into the habit of preaching with the open Bible in one hand, and for emphasis they periodically 'thumpped' it with the backs of their other hand, creating a resounding noise. There must be knack to it, I've never been able to get more than a dull, low 'thud'!

IMO, a Bible thumper is a person who not only shoves their religious beliefs down someone's throat, they must use the book to refer to every detail in life. They are rarely seen without it.

Some one who is so evangelistic they can't respect anything outside their beliefs.
Some one who can't take a hint or is honestly flabbergasted when you tell them "you're not interested".
Some one who believes they are absolutely right so therefore they have the right, no the duty, to cram down your throat their faith by any means possible. They might start with a sense of fair play but that will go by the wayside and they are capable of doing some really nasty stuff because they feel they are serving the highest good even while they are defacing it.
Bible thumping is a sickness of faith and a perversion of God word.

George W. Bush is the perfect example. Someone who bases the way they live their life and influence other people's lives on a book that was written as a "guide" a very very long time ago. Basically anyone who actually takes the bible literally - meaning word for word as a definitive instruction manual for life.

Someone who shoves the bible down others throats instead of living a Christ like life and leading by example. They say a picture paints a thousand words, living a life in Christ says 10,000,000 words
