Multiple ASA championships, a bunch of IROC championships, and a contender for many years in the Cup series. Yes, I'd have to say Martin is the best driver out there to have never been awarded a Cup championship. Not forgetting about all those wins in the truck and Busch series also.

Mark is definatly that driver. Say what you will about the wins and winning percentages of other drivers, but Mark has been 2nd in final point standings several times and more than any other. Twice to Earnhardt #3. That says alot of the class of driver he is. Mark has also done more for his sport in the era he is in than others in the past that hasnt won a championship. Not only has he helped build Rousch racing to where it is today but has been a key figure and go-to person for NASCAR in alot of it's R&D teams and forward motion to bring the sport to another level. There is more to being a great driver than just being a man behind the wheel.

This is a good question - I think he is because he still was always able to finish in the Top 10 or 5. Which is good, but I still wish I could have seen him win a championship.

In the modern era, yes.
Historically, it has to be Fireball Roberts, hands down. In his short career he earned 32 pole positions, won 33 events and garnered 22 runner-up positions in only 207 races, along with a total of 93 Top-5s and 122 Top-10s. He set an astonishing 400 records at various tracks, leading a total of 5,970 laps including 1,644 laps led at South Carolina's famed Darlington Raceway, NASCAR's first superspeedway and best known as the track "Too Tough To Tame".
Roberts' 33 wins in 207 races equates to a winning percentage of 15.94%. Jeff Gordon narrowly exceeds that winning percentage and is the only active driver that does. Only David Pearson (105 wins in 574 starts - 18.29%) and Richard Petty (200 wins in 1185 starts - 16.88%) have a higher win percentage than Fireball Roberts of inactive drivers with over 200 starts. (Sorry, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fans... the late, great driver of the #3 car "only" managed 79 wins in 676 starts, or 11.24%.)

No he won't. Junior Johnson will.
Martin has won one as an owner though. He was listed as the owner of Matt Kenseth's 17 when Kenseth won the 2003 Championship. Jack Roush really owned it.
He also won the IROC a few times.

I'd say Junior Johnson, from back in the good ole days of Nascar....Mark is a good driver, he has just had racing bad luck...He has alot of wins, but driving only a part time schedule now, he'll never a Cup Championship..

I think he is the best of the modern era to have never won a cup Championship. I think Junior Johnson was the best in his era of racing.

Mark is a good driver.,but detest watching him grin and say," I'm just havin'' funnnnn"..if you are going to be a driver, go for the championship...kinda thumbin' your nose at the sponsors with that attitude..why don't you go to KiddyLand in Arkansas and have some funnnnnnn'...

He's good but he will never win the cup soon. He has Hendrick & Joe Gibbs racing that are hard to beat. I mean Jr cant even make the chase so how is he going to be a champion?

No, Junior Johnson is the best driver to have never won a championship. I know Junior never finished higher than 6th in the final standings but he never came close to running a full season. He couldn't afford to race full time, running moonshine payed much more at that time. Junior also has a much higher winning percentage (15.92%) than Mark (5.04%)and is even better than Jeff Gordon (15.74%) in that department.
