I would like some ideas for some presents for my girlfriend who's going travelling (taking a year out to travel Asia, Australasia and parts of South America).
I was thinking of buying a phone, maybe an iPhone (but she's resident in Ireland!?) and/or maybe an iPod or a digital camera but would like some thoughts and/or recommendations on where and what to buy. Other suggestions are also welcome.

Lonely Planet......a "travel towel" for hair.....some miniature stuff like little bottle of moisturiser for the plane, as the international limits on liquid on a flight is 100ml, but it is still nice to carry your own moisturiser on board...(is she a girly girl??)......as a girl travelling on my own, I was sometimes too worried about iPods etc being stolen to take one......what about a phone card so she can phone home without a mobile? (or skype credit?) Little luxuries are nice when you're travelling, like some "nice" hand cream, I liked a St. Christopher's medal (the patron saint of travellers) that my Mum bought me and I wore the whole time.....or a little photograph of my boyf. Camera is a necessity! Has she got Birkenstock shoes? Necessary travel shoes! haha. A mag light?

A large chamoi that acts as a towel but takes up less than a quarter of the space in your bag.

A good book to read and perhaps a travel guide too. Lonely planet have some good one's.

i wouldn't suggest getting her electronic devices. as a tourist, she should try to minimize carrying valuable things. it puts her at a higher risk of getting mugged. but if you insist, and she doesn't have a camera, get her one. you might want to get her one of those portable hand-held poles that she can attach the camera to...for self portraits without having to ask ppl to help her take pics.
