A few months ago i bought a Dell Inspiron 3000 cpu and it was already working on Windows98,until yesterday when i decided to upgrade to Windows Xp. I load the cd,the screen pops up and i click "Install Windows XP". After about 2 minutes of loading a message pops up saying "Setup information file D:\I386\DOSNET.INF is invalid. This is frustrating me to 9th power. I NEED HELP!!!

Sounds like that particular driver is corrupted on the disk. If I remember correctly from my days using Windows 98, the best solution is to keep trying until it takes. Yeah, I know, that's stupid, but that is what I was told by Microsoft back in the day. Another suggestion was to actually place the files on the system and load the files from the desktop. That is the one that worked for me, after about 6 times. There is always the possibility of taking the disk back to the store, assuming you bought it at a store, and getting another disk in replacement. If you know anyone who has that operating system already installed, you can go to their I386 folder and get a non-corrupted DOSNET.INF file. By the way, are you doing a complete clean install or the upgrade. That also affects it's stability in installation. Sometimes the upgrade works perfectly, sometimes, as in my case, it eventually works, other times it's best to just completely kill the Windows 98 on the machine and just do a complete reformat and clean install of XP. I know that sucks, but that's technology for you.

Did you buy the upgrade, or get a burned copy? If it's a burned copy, that's probably why there is a file error. If you did buy the upgrade CD, contact Microsoft and they can troubleshoot with you.
