Actually it's December 21, 2012.

It's the end date of the Mayan (or pre-Mayan) Long Count calendar.

Some superstitious people have tried to construe that as being the date the world ends, but in reality, it means no such thing.

The Mayan calendar runs in cycles. Once one cycle ends, a new one begins (or technically an old one runs again). The current cycle of the Mayan calendar ends 12/21/2012, I believe. Some people feel that means it is the end of the world. It really just means we start a new (restart an old) Mayan cycle.

The thing is, the next Mayan cycle that is supposed to come around is apparently not a very good one. If the cycles really do run again, we could be in trouble.

Think I saw the same show. As previously stated the Mayan Calander ends, but the catastophic event that's supposed to happen is scientific, not religious.

Supposedly, in 2012 the Solar system and Earth will fall into an alignment with a nearby black hole. The combined gravitational effects of the black hole and the sun will supposedly cause massive tectonic stresses on Earth with a series of powerful worldwide earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunami that wipe out every city and completely alter the Earth's climate.

Every so oftten, someone comes up with an idea of when the world will end, or when Christ will return, etc.
They devise all kinds of reasoning to back up their belief...and get others to believe it also.
Some are seriously deluded, the rest I think are in it to make money.
Without naming names, there was a popular Christian author that said the Earth was soon to end. Sold a lot of books proving what he said. THEN- he put all his profit into long-term savings bonds.
Wow, I guess he fooled people pretty good. That happened in the 70s.
Yes, there will be an end. To find out what the real deal is, you have to read Bible prophecy because it is 100% accurate, and not too terribly hard to understand if you are willing to learn.

The Mayan calender ends on that date. Some say 12 / 21. Since their calender ends, some assume it meant there would be no 12 / 24...

It's based on the Mayan calendar ending on that date. As far as I know they did not leave any explanation as to why the calendar ended then. Since they were not a successful culture and didn't foresee their own demise, I would find it hard to put any credit into their prophecies.
