The guitar or the piano are often recognized as the main instruments in blues. There are exceptions however. Yank Rachell for example played the mandolin. The harmonica is also quite common. The guitar become the main blues instrument out of ease, prior to that banjos, jugs, fiddle, and other folk instruments were common.

Let me help you out right quick

You see, there is no "main" instrument in blues or any other type of song, there are common, but not main, especially in blues, it can be almost anything. But if you're looking for a guitar type instrument, try a 60 Clean type of Guitar, if you're looking for harmonicas, they all start at a different key, you get the picture, but it's what you FEEL in an instrument, you just don't go like "Hey, this instrument is cool" *Yoink* and then like it, you have to actually know you like it by playing it, if you like it still, then it's yours.

While the guitar is probably viewed as the main instrument, I would think that the bass, either upright or electric, would be the main instrument. Whether the piano, guitar, or voice is the main instrument for melody in the blues, the bass has always been there for accompanyment, even if drums aren't used for beat. I can hear people crying, "Foul!" right now, but if you want to split hairs, it would have to be the bass.

The drummer and bass player are the main rhythm components. They provide the constant beat that everybody needs. You can also have a piano/keyboard and guitar as rhythm or lead players Horns can also be both rhythm and lead especially saxophone in blues. There can be many different rhythms in a song by the various instruments. Basically everybody is playing a background rhythm except for the singer or the instrument that's taking a lead. tele714

The human voice - without it, the genre would not be complete. Other than that, the piano and the guitar. The guitar because it is very portable, the piano because it used to be in the juke joints and bawdy houses were the modern forms of the blues came from.
