if you want to go to plantations or swamps you need a car if you are not on a tour.

otherwise you don't need one for new orleans....walk or taxi or streetcar

EDIT: does the person who gives a thumbs down ride a horse around town or what......!!!!!! i have personally walked multiple times from the quarter to the garden district & magazine & other places & taxied back...or taxi there & walk back.....good exercise walking off all those meals....

The French Quarter is the tip of the iceberg. You can easily rent a car at the airport, I suggest it. I did it numerous times last year, when I was shooting a doc there. But you'll want to see much more than the Quarter. There's Algiers, on the West Bank, there's the magazine district, the Lower 9th Ward (fascinating, because you can see the citizen efforts to revivie it), Uptown, the Garden district... it's all great.

Hope you enjoy :)

You won't need a car to see all the stuff near the river and the French Quarter and the Marigny, but you'll need one to go to Algiers Point or if you go out to see some of the swamp outside the city.

There is much more to New Orleans than just the French Quarter and Bourbon Street.

I personally prefer having my own transportation so I always rent a car. You will likely appreciate having one if you're an explorer. Parking in the quarter is nightmarish and expensive, but it's cool to be able to get in your car and go everywhere, because there is a lot to see. You may want to check out the old cemetaries (during the day!) and see the flood damaged areas.

There is so much to do out side of the french quarter, but you dont really need to rent a car to see and do things. you cant walk to most places or take a taxi or bus, or even the street car.

I was told that if you are in the FQ..do not bother with a car. The streets are narrow, parking is hard to find and expensive and you can get anywhere in 20 minutes or less.
