They are not brainwashed. They do not undergo lobotomies. The detainees are illegal combatants within the meaning of the Laws of Land Warfare (Geneva Conventions). Since 2002, 445 of those intially held have been released to other countries. 330 remain at Guantanamo. Of those, 70 are eligible for release.
In previous wars, illegal combatants were shot after being captured and no one questioned that action because it was permitted under the Laws of Land Warfare. Those who express grave concern over these detainees would also scream bloody murder if those detainees were released, given Section Eight housing assistance and moved into the neighborhoods of the protestors.

Probably until our operations in Afghanistan and Iraq die down. How long are they usually kept? Indefinitely if they think they are a problem. Some have been released, most are transfered to foreign prisons like Syria, Lebanon or other Middle Eastern countries. Their is no brainwashing or lobotomy.

How can one country invade another, unprovoked, and declare anyone, who is trying to defend their country an illegal combatant. Many of these prisoners were non-combatants who were sold to the invading army(The US), by the Northern alliance when the invasion started. The present administration in the US does not recognize Geneva or any other international treaties. Bush even considers the US Constitution an annoyance but this happens when a nation is led by fascists.

The ones who are truly guilty are placed in front of a secret (eg: not open to the public) military tribunal and tried for their crimes. I have not heard the results of any sentences handed down so I don't know if they are getting the death penalty or life in prison.

The ones who the Bush Admin. have no evidence of wrongdoing, other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time, will rot in Gitmo until the next President is elected.

And at this point, I don't see any pro-Gitmo candidates having a chance to get elected. So, the prison will probably be closed down by February 2009.
