you do need to take him to the vet where she can check him and maybe keeep him to check for symptoms. even if the dog has a rabies shot it can still get rabies.

Not all possums have rabies. Very few actually do. Besides rabies there are other diseases a possum can carry so you should get your dog checked out to be safe. Make sure your dog is up to date on all his vaccines while he is at the vet. This will prevent further scares. Good Luck!

just because its a possum, that doesn't mean it does have rabies. it can get rabies, but they aren't born with it and have it all the time. if your dog has its rabies shot up to date i wouldn't worry about it too much. if you are still worried about it, take the dead possum to the vets office and have them test it for rabies. you will probably have to pay for this, but if it does come back positive, then at least it will be on record for your community

Must be that time of year. Our dog got one Tuesday night. Not all opossums have rabies. In fact, in the state of Michigan no rabies cases have been reported involving a opossum. Your state may be the same. Try your state department of agriculture web site. What makes you thing this one did? If your dog has had its rabies shots then it will not get rabies. If it hasn't had the shots, and in a rare case the opossum did, then it is possible that you dog could get it.

Take your dog and the possum to a vet that way they can test the dead possum for rabies to see if there is any threat.

Is your dog current on his rabies vaccine? does he have any bite or scratch marks from the possum? If in doubt take him to the vet.

Fact is.. Opossums RARELY ever have rabies. Their body temperature is to low to support the disease. There was one in Virginia several years ago but you likely safe even if you have never had your dog vaccinated for rabies. I would not be rushing off in a panic to the vets office. If you want to call your local conservation club and ask them if they can advise whether or not you should have the opposum tested.. feel free. But I wouldn't worry about any of it.
My dogs kill Opossums whenever they get into our yard and it doesn't concern me.

As long as your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date, he should be fine. My dog got into a fight with a skunk that bit him on the face and this was what my vet told me. If the vaccine is not up todate, however, get your dog to the vet to be checked out.

If your dog has an up to date Rabies vaccination he will be fine. If he doesn't you are probably breaking the law.(Most states require Rabies vaccinations.)
