upgraded my computer to Windows Vista Ultimate, and was it a huge mistake!
I have an HP XP Media Center installation disk.
I downloaded Vista from a torrent.
How can I go back to Windows XP Media Center Edition, without having any of my files damaged or deleted?
I know it can be done somehow.

Have a very quiet talk to your computer dealer. Windows is secretly supplying Vista to XP downgrades would you believe? Not all dealers will have them but your HP dealer might. Cry, jump up and down, scream, wave placards, but don't leave without a copy.

To remove Vista you must format your hard drive. This is going to cause you to loose all data. So first so a backup of all your personal data including your Favorites and your Address Book. Then format the drive and reinstall XP.

You might try a system restore to the first backup date before you installed vista, other than that I'd call your cpu provider and ask them how to un-install/re-install os
