Does anyone know anything about sending a package to a submarine that is out to sea? Specifically, I have an address, but I am not sure of any details. Such as how long it will take to ship and the likely hood of it ever reaching my friend. I am going to take a chance and send it but I am trying to find more information.

Look...from what I've been told when you send mail to a sub... it goes to a navy base gets sorted and sent to the next port that sub will be at. I am wondering if anyone has had experience with sending a package to a sailor on a sub and can give me advice. On things like what to send and if it will get there or not.

The best answer you're going to get is from anyone who says don't send anything too perishable and don't expect anything to get there on time.
The letter that you drop into the US mail goes to a clearing house for the military where they put it into the military mail service. How fast it gets out of there depends on a lot of things like space available and knowledge of schedules.
A lot of times the sub schedule is secret and it changes a TON so port calls aren't always where they had planned to be even just a few days ago. I've sent stuff to my subbie that got to the next port call and the sub just fine. And I've sent stuff that followed him around the world and found him the week after he pulled in at home.

SUB common sense.
You can not mail a package to a sub that is underway. As far I as I know the USPS does not deliver to the bottom of the ocean.
All kidding aside. You can send mail to the crew member at their base address. When and if they have a port call, mail will be sent to the sub. More than likely, crew member will receive your mail and or package once they return to their homeport.
Communication with your submariner while they are deployed is... well lets say more than difficult.
Mail your packages and or letters to the base address, eventually it will be received and appreciated. A suggestion, non parishables only and no glass or aerosol cans. All mail is subject to inspection and size can be limited. Also it is important to not include any information about illness, deaths and or births. This type of message should only be sent via the chain of command. Good luck.

don't send anything that will go bad.. nonperishable goods only. depending on the type of Sub, they could be underwater 90 days or more before they ever surface to get a Mail drop. Worse case scenario is that it will be forwarded on to Home port and they will get it when they return home at the end of the underway period.
For this reason, nothing time sensitive either.

Contact the nearest Navy base first and talk to them. There may be restrictions on what can be in the package (such as perishable items or other). As for how long it takes, can take quite a while, up to a month in my experience. Depends on what type sub and its mission.

You send it to the FPO address. When the boat pulls into port, accumulated mail is usually waiting for you. I was on the USS Plunger (SSN 595) for four and a half years. During my time at sea we recieved one delivery while at sea: a part for our broken airconditioning system that was airlifted by copter from a nearby carrier. I suspect that was one more delivery than most submarines recieve in their entire lifetime, althought strictly speaking that delivery wasn't mail.

It will reach your friend, how long it will take depends on how long they are "out of reach". Mail is typically delivered when they meet up with another ship in the battlegroup that is able to receive mail, or are in port. Don't send anything perishable or breakable.

It would more then likely get shipped either to an aircraft carrier they port with, or the next base they will be at, unless they deliver by helicopter. I would think maybe a weeks time they would get it. They get mail like everyone else.

I believe you would send it too the address he has and he will get the package when he ports. Don't send him a 4 wheel drive quad, they are hard to get in a submarine.

Anything you send will be held until the next time the submarine returns to port.
