And don't pay it back.

Thanks for the responses.

I have said "No" many times to friends and lost friendship over it. It's much harder to say no with family though for some reason.

You use the one word that most people don't use often enough, "NO". It's not your job to support everyone else. If you are able to lend the money, and you want to help someone out then put it all in writing. Tell them that you've been burned too many times by, "you know who" to lend money out without a written agreement. They'll all be so worried about who "you know who" is that you may get paid back more than you expected. Plus, when word gets to the people that are taking advantage of you the most, they may retreat into their shell with the knowledge that you're on to them.

They are taking advantage of your good nature. A few years ago, I told my oldest daughter that Mom & Dad's Loan & Loan Some More Associated were nigh bankruptcy as we've never learned to collect debts, only loan money to ungrateful children. And I said "I'm sorry" after that. She never asked again, come to think of it she began to babysit for about 10 hours a week for a couple, which provided her with the same amount of money we had been giving her. But she gets to feel special because we just give her money sometimes. We only give money to our children, and even then, only the amount that we have decided upon. The children have no say about it. And sometimes, we choose not to give them money. That's because it's our money and we'll do as we please with it. Another thing that we've told our daughters, "Get a job, ya hippie!".

Stop loaning money!!!

If your relatives are able-bodied, then they can get a job, save money and live within their means.

You are not responsible for the finances of other adults.

It's very nice to help from time to time, BUT, mostly a person who loans out money all the time is just being used and manipulated.

Take care.

Tell them that due to abuse on the part of abusers constantly asking for money and who don't repay and show appreciation, that you have adopted the stance that lending money ruins relationships and therefore will no longer lend money to anyone. And stick to it. If you lose friends, then they weren't friends, they were users. If family gets upset, give them some alternatives for getting the money they need, but stick to your guns.

Just remember that the easiest way to make enemies is to loan someone money. No matter how you phrase it to them
they always resent you asking for payment on the loan, and you will resent having to ask. Just let them know that the bank is closed and stand firm, your relationship with your family will be better for it in the long run.

when you find the answer let me know. I have the same problem. and a guy named Fred on here had the right idea, he said to start acting real needy before they can ask. that was also my brothers idea too. It works for him. Lets try it.
