Why won't they make the D3 and the EOS 1ds Mark 3 the same size as the Nikon F6 and the EOS-1v and just include a detachable battery grip?

because the people that buy the high-end professional DSLRs don't want them compact. I buy those and would be mortified if they did that. The last thing I want is some subcompact dinky little camera that my lens out weighs and tilts over in my hands because the camera is to tiny and light to counter balance it.

My understanding is that there are a couple of reasons. First, in order to counter balance the weight of the larger, faster lenses a pro camera needs to be a little bit heavier, and the grip helps. Second, battery life is important to nearly every professional, and a grip provides the room for more batteries. Obviously an optional grip would be nice, but my guess is that almost everyone buying a pro-line dSLR will buy the grip anyway so manufacturers just build it in to the body.

I'm not an engineer, nor do I know the innerworkings of these newfangled electronic devices, but more physical space may be required for the processing power required to shoot at high FPS, high MP, and all the other bells and whistles they throw on the new models.

I too wish they would make a pro build camera in a smaller body. If only I could get a pro camera the size of a 5D or F100.

Also, have you ever seen inside one of those cameras? It's not like the camera manufacturers just decided to put point and shoot electronics in a big body. It's totally packed. There's no room to shrink it.

Pro cameras are also built to withstand more rugged woring conditions and are beefier as a result.
