Good question. No one really knows. It's thought to be a matter of brain function. There are various experiments that can be done, because of course all of us are unconscious part of the day, while asleep.
If there were a soul, what happens to it when you're unconscious? The hypothesis of a soul is just that of a "spiritual person" that operates the body like a homunculus.

being conscious of ourselves is not necessarily a consequence of not having any soul which is outside the domain of reason. rather it proceeds from the fact that humans are sencient and rational which may be the reason why we are conscious of ourselves.

Because you are conscious,there is a false sense of "I" am conscious. Consciousness is Present in every form and is playing out every story. Most just accept the story and never explore the presence or awareness of BEING!

No-one really knows. But how would having a soul help the matter? All you've done is push the homunculus back a level.

Why assume that a soul is what gives us consciousness?
