I was recently in Los Angeles for the first time, drove up from San Diego. As I was entering LA on the freeway, I saw what I guess was smog, a yellow film around the lower sky. Does this ever go away, or is it always present?

It doesn't have to be yellow. Sometimes it's more of a grey or brown hue. One rare occasions, it even turns a bit green (indicates high acidity levels). This gives the city an "alien invasion" feel to it for a few hours.

But the smog never goes completely away. As a general rule, if you can clearly see certain landmarks from far away, the air quality is "good" on that day.

For example, the U.S. Bank Tower should be visible from the Hollywood Hills. If you're up there and haze obscures the building, then the pollution level is probably quite high.

Admittedly, the air quality in L.A. is never as clear and clean as San Diego or San Francisco. However, it has gotten better over the years. In the 1980s, sometimes the pollution was so rife that people were advised to stay indoors on certain days.

No Mike I personally have never seen it really clear. I have tried to take numerous photos of downtown and Century City (from elevations both north and south) and every single one of them is messed up by what looks like "clouds" of different colors..I have seen good clear photos of both places, but I can not imagine when or how they were taken unless they were photoshopped...It's quite sad...Yeh and for some reason the view from the south, say around Palos Verde elevations, is one of the worst...It's a brown haze...kind of disgusting, really...

Yes, after it rains, or during the Santa Anas (winds), the winds blow it out to sea.

Nope. And what is really gross is that what you see in the sky actually reaches the ground- meaning that residents breathe that air every day.
