Everyone will have completely different opinions on this as all tattoo artists have different aftercare instructions.

Other than the added vitamins A & D, they are essentially similar in that they both contain petroleum jelly and lanolin . Many artists don't like either applied to tattoos because the clients often apply way too much and can interfere with proper healing of the tattoo. Also, with large tattoos, this can create a greasy stain on clothing.

These are reasons why the majority of artists I know prefer a mild unscented lotion after the initial couple of days of one of these ointments.

Hello! The main point of healing a tattoo is to keep it clean and use an unscented mild lotion to keep it slightly moist, not a lot of lotion is needed, Only a thin layer 3-4 times a day with freshly washed clean hands. A & D ointment or a petroleum based product is not good and will trap bacteria and hold it in the fresh tattoo; also with these products your tattoo can not breathe and will stay too moist. As far as neosprorin...bad idea. Most people have good hygeine and do not need an antibacterail ointment that not only kills the bad bacteria but also you own good natural bacteria that is there to fight the bad....resident flora vs. transient flora. Also when you decide what product to use; stick with that one product; don't use one product one day and another the next. Best of luck and enjoy your tattoo.

I've always used A&D in very thin coats for the 1st 3 days of healing & after that fragrance free & scent free lotion like Lubriderm.
Ldy Bug - You should never use a triple antibiotic on a tattoo (like Neosporin) because they are designed to pull out foreign material from wounds as they promote healing. Tattoo ink is a foreign material.
There is no need to use a triple antibiotic when there is no infection in the tattoo. It can damage the tattoo image & cause line blowout also.

I've used A+D for all my tattoos and they all healed rather nicely. The tattoo parlor that I always go to suddenly changed their suggestion from A+D to a frangrance free lotion for the healing process. I decided to go ahead and try the lotion but it didn't keep my tattoo moist and it took longer for it to heal. I went back to A+D and that's the only thing I'll use.

To me, Aquaphor and A&D are both to greasy. I use plain Curel lotion and I have 15 perfectly healed tattoos.

I use Curel lotion (fragrance free) only. It is best to apply it several times a day. It is much better than the petroleum based A&D and Aquaphor

Aquaphor is fantastic for a moisturizer and I am sure that it helps protect the area. My tatoo artist aways told me to use tripple antibiotic ointment for moisture, haeling, and to fight off infection.

what tatt brat says.
my artist says to use either A+D or aquaphor for 3ish days and then to switch to a fragrance free lotion, regardless of size.
