Popularity should be measured by not number of followers but by rate of increase of following and chrsitianity is loosing. Forget about pure monotheistic religion like Islam, christians are even converting to pagan religions like hinduism.

If you want to understand how Christianity became so big you need to go back to Constantine. As soon as Christianity got control of the Roman military might it began a campaign of exterminating all opposing religions it could reach. Then starting in the 15th century it had the good fortune to be carried overseas to new countries that the Europeans started to Conquer. With the extermination of up to 90% of the native populations in the Americas Christianity was able to add 2 entire continents to its territory in under 200 years.
Christianity is the most popular religion today because it was the most violent. It killed off everybody that was not Christian that it possibly could.
Now they are going to try eliminating the Muslims.
---------------
For those doubting the numbers check Adherents.com.
Christianity has 2 billon followers and the next largest religion has 1 billion.
When you ad the numbers from adherents you should end up with just under 3 billion not counted. Those people have no religion. Surprise!

There is something you got all wrong. Buddhism and Islam are both growing very fast and many of the of new members are jumping from Christianity. Christianity is pretty much as popular as the united states.
Another thing is, that you cannot trust those numbers. In many countris the whole population is considered christian, if the country leader (king/queen) has announced the country to be christian... But fact is that in those countries over half of the population is atheist and the rest religious, and of the religious the christians are in minority.

Go on the internet and google the numbers. And Christianity is LOSING followers. There are more Atheists than ever in history and most of them were once Christian. The Pagan religions are also gaining members.

Christianity is the largest religion today but, as it's numbers are declining, I wouldn't say that it's the most popular

Actually Muslim has more followers but you could consider Christians to be some what Muslim and vice versa...They bothe believe in Jesus but Christians go one step further in worshipping him as a God (Jesus indicated several times he is not God but that is contradicted many times by the writings of his followers) Buddha kind of had the same problem...He said some really good things and eventually people started worshipping his statue...Personally I think (coming from historical evidence) that they were both fictional characters, I do like the goodness of Buddhism though (when was the last time you heard of Buddhist monks killing for their belief?)

It's NOT!
If not now, eventually (and I think it will be sooner than we expect), Christianity will be mocked, scoffed and ridiculed. When the antichrist comes on the scene, every OTHER religion will be accepted, but Christians will have to go "under cover", so to speak, nor will we even be able to buy or sell anything.
Already, if you follow some of the questions in just this forum alone, you'll see that Christians are mocked and ridiculed by scoffers, mockers, atheists, agnostics, and even other religious systems,
Additional comment:
Doesn't this "thumbs down" prove my point?

I think you meant to say, the religion with the most followers.
In a nutshell, the forced conversion of Europe in the dark ages followed by their colonization efforts spread christianity all over the planet.

Is it really I have found more Christians turning to Paganism then Pagans turning to Christianity as of late. I find it both disconcerting & releaving at the same time.
to suddenly deside that the path you are on is wrong & to make "radical change is not good, but to stay on a bad path is just as bad.

Not sure that "most popular" or "fastest growing" are the best recommendations for selecting a religion, nor do they say anything about whether it's right or not.
