As long as there have been slaves, there have been people of religion who were against slavery. Many a battle was fought over the keeping of slaves, and religious zealots who have attempted to free them.

The Civil War fought in our country has been touted by some to have been over slavery. It was not, it was over states rights. Each state thought that the government should not have the right to tell them what they could do and what they could not. Oddly enough, blacks and whites fought side by side in that conflict.

In the late 1800's many Christians fought against slavery, ever heard the battle hymn of the republic
"My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah"

All of this was over slavery.
