I am due to have one as I suffer from Plantar fasciitis and will be having the injection into my foot, my GP is doing it for me. Can anyone tell me if it is as painful as I have been told it is?

Yes, it IS painful, but the relief you get is more than worth it. I have had injections in several parts of my body and I can tell you this: In the long haul, planta fasciitis is much more painful than the injection!!! At least the injection is over and done with in a short amount of time, whereas the plantar fasciitis nearly kills you first thing every morning!

Everyone's pain tolerance is different, and one person will tell you it isn't too bad, an another will tell you it is horrible. I have had Steroid injections in both shoulders, my wrist, my knees, both ankles, and once for plantar fasciitis. I have found the more you have injections the less they seem to bother you, so now, I just accept the are coming, know that they will be reasonably uncomfortable, but that the end result will be an improvement if I follow up with appropriate physio therapy.

By the way, I have also made my living giving those same injections for years, and have found that each person's technique for injecting the steroids can have a significant effect on the amount of pain the patient feels.

I've had cortisone shots in my shoulder and elbow and yes it is painful because the doctor injects it right into the spot where you are getting the most pain, but it's only painful for one day, then after that you are pain free. It's worth the short term pain to feel the relief when the pain goes away!

I have had several (at least 5) over the last few years in my knee. It didn't hurt anymore than any other shot.

I think it really depends on how good your Doctor is. I have had blood drawing and had it hurt alot and not at all. These shots are probably the same. If he is good at doing it, it wont hurt much.

Just remember that it is only a temporary fix. I ended up having knee surgery a few month ago, even after having the shot.

It will be if you get worked up about it. Relax and breathe properly and it will probable sting more that hurt. I have had several over the years and have lived to tell the tale.

PS My hubby had the same sort of injection in his foot and he never so much as murmured...he's a man so it can't be that bad believe me,

You'll be fine...focus your mind on something else whilst your haveing the injection..

I had one in my joint in my thumb. Yes, it hurts. They poked the needle in and then had to change angles to get in the right spot. The sound it made made my stomach turn. I flinched, and the worst part of it was when it was over, the guy who gave the shot said "that wasn't so bad, was it," and kind of sneered. I felt like popping him in the nose and saying the same thing back to him. I ended up having surgery.
Get relaxed, this is something you need to do, and maybe wear earplugs. I'm sure you have been through worse pain than this shot, and you just have to remember that. You will survive! Good luck.

I too have Plantar Faciitis. I had the injection last year, and it bloody hurt! My heel was MUCH worse for 24hrs, then after 2 weeks was fine.

Unfortunetly, the Plantar Faciitis retuned again this year, and I had the injection again (V.painful) but the results have only been about 20%

I had it done to my shoulder. They mixed a pain killer in with the cortezone. I asked the doctor to use a smaller needle.. it took him a little longer to inject but it was far less painful than it would have been. Actually, it didn't hurt a bit.

Yes, Ive had them in my shoulder a few years ago. They dont hurt and the relief you get from them is fantastic, however you can only have so many in one year due to the steroid content.
