Couple of things to mention about your question. What will the computer used for? Primarily gaming and then some internet browsing, email, and other basic stuff? If so then it may actually make more sense to buy the PS3 believe it or not. Here's why:
The PS3 is basically a computer, you can load another OS on the machine, in fact in the manual it tells you how, in the menu there's an option for loading another OS on the machine. You can load Linux onto the PS3, load Open Office, and Linux has a built in browser and email client. So you've got your computer right there. All you'll need is either a usb or bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you're set. All of your internet browsing can be done with the PS3's browser, or boot into Linux and run Firefox.
There was someone that suggested a 360, and you can go that way as long as you don't want to use your system with any reliability. The 360 breaks down more than 30% of the time, where you'll have to send it off to be repaired/refurbed.
The 60GB PS3 is the only one that will have the hardware chip for backward compatiblity, all the other versions (soon to be released 40GB and the 80GB do it via software) not as reliable, in fact go to the compatiblity list and check a title for compatibility on the 60GB version, then the 80GB, there's a difference.
Just some information for you to consider. Also one more thing about the 60GB HDD being too small for computing, not a problem, in the manual for the PS3, it shows you how to replace the hard drive, and what specs your new hard drive needs to be, buy a bigger hard drive (120GB, or bigger if you want).

Firstly, the website you linked into was unviewable, so I couldn't see what the computer that interests you looks like. :(
I'm assuming that you're buying a computer for games? If that's the case, then a top of the range PC is going to beat a PS3 for performance every time. Especially if you're running top spec graphics cards. Not to mention all the other uses you can put it to, as well as games :)
From all accounts, the Xbox 360 isn't vastly inferior to the PS3 in terms of performance, and in some cases may even be superior... and with the new "Falcon" model coming into stores even as I speak, this might be a serious alternative, assuming you don't have one already. For the price difference, you could buy one of those, and pick up a brand new PS2 whilst you were at it.
At the moment, many games out on PS3 are coming out months after their Xbox counterparts. Something, again, you might want to bear in mind, if you're planning on playing the very latest games.
The 40GB model (new out) doesn't have backward compatibility, as it's a "pared down" system. I'd think the 80GB model would however, as that's a top of the range machine. If you're UK based, you might also want to bear in mind, that Sony took out the chip that ensured total backwards compatibility with PS2 games. So whilst most of the games are okay, some more obscure or less well supported ones, might not be...
Myself, I'd go with the PC, and wait until prices drop. Significantly. Sony right now, has it's hands full with Microsoft and Nintendo. The PS3 isn't having the easy time of it the PS2 did. Which can only be good for you, money wise, in the long run.
Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy your newfound purchase! :)

I think I just read the 40GB and 80GB will have backwards compatibility but rather than it being hardware based it will now be software based distributed through firmware upgrades automatically. So saying that it's up to you, there is going to be a price cut quite soon for the PS3 to about £370, but in my opinion its best to get a PC first as it can do many more things and play games plus you will never have the best experience with a PS3 until you get a HDTV. Oh and for me that link doesn't work, have you thought about building a PC? it tends to be cheaper and you know what you are putting into it so you know its high quality.
In conclusion PC first, PS3 price will come down so its worth waiting for but its just a games console, but the PC is so much more and I'm sure you could probably find a 60GB PS3 somewhere even after those versions become widespread but best chances are looking on the Internet after that happens.

Get a computer. You will get a lot more use out of a computer then you ever will with a PS3. With the PS 3 at most you will play games, listen to music, and watch movies. What will you do if you needed to check e-mails, type a letter, browse the Internet, or for that matter, answer more questions in Yahoo Answers? Go with the computer first.

No guarantees, but I've seldom seen any electronic device that didn't make regular appearances on ebay, etc.
Also, at least locally we have game stores which take older systems as trade-ins for new systems, then clean up the older systems and sell them. So that would be another possible source for what you are seeking.
As for the computer, you might also check ebay, or a local used computer store, etc. and see if you could find something comperable, but signifcantly cheaper, and have enough money saved that you could afford the ps3...

PS3 is great, but it's for games only. It's better to buy new desktop with good videocard - may be games won't be so shiny - but it can do tons of other stuff. Laptops are smaller, but it's almost impossible to upgrade them.
