The church is afraid you will read the book and compare it to the religion they cannot support by the Bible nor by any other book. If you compare the catholic religion to the Bible, you will find they do not follow the Book. Da Vinci Code is truly fiction, but could cause some people to start searching for the truth.
I mean no put-down toward catholics, but have observed they are afraid to allow people to search for the truth.

Because it causes doubt, and there are many people out there who believed the Da Vinci Code was real, and still do. They'll argue with you if you tell them it's not real. I remember seeing one lady claiming it had to be true because they wouldn't have been allowed to publish the book if it wasn't.
Put in simplest terms: some people are stupid. To avoid confusion and doubt being placed in the minds of followers, the Vatican said don't read it.

My cynical (perhaps) view is that the Catholic Church sees itself as a ruling body. The problem is that many people view them as such as well. They cannot in law tell you not to do something nor can they restrict you from reading or viewing anything. If you want to obey their rules then its your choice, no one else's.
The church makes many rules which they cannot have tested because they are unable to or is against their own rules, divorce for example, so how would they know if the rule they obey or make you obey is justified.
But at the end of the day its YOUR choice. There are so many religions who all worship the same God .. how can one be different in its rules. Ask yourself if God would punish you for reading a book or watching a movie .. I think not.

I honestly believe it's because the Vatican doesn't want you thinking for yourself... just follow blindly, be a good little child of the church and you "might" get to "Heaven".
I've got many Catholic Co-workers and that is the exact attitude they have. If a discussion about religion comes up and I ask a question they don't have an answer to, instead of looking it up for themselves, they tell me they have to go to their Priest to get an answer. They are always respectful, but it just seems to me that many in that Church follow blindly.

Like most of the other poster's I think it's because they are afraid that someone might question "What if...?" What if Jesus was married, What if he had a child....?
Now I'm not Catholic but I am very strong in my faith. I did read the book, Angels and Demons too. My church says to read things. It did make me question things but I looked for the answers and found my faith strengthened.
I don't think any church should say what you can and cannot read.

Becquse everybody loves a conspiracy theory. The Vatican probably knew millions of their people would take the fiction for fact.
Religion really messes people's minds up.

If you read and ask explanation they can tell their side of the story. Before reading the book, prohibitions can be made with reasons. Otherwise it will end up in propaganda for those books.

The book is blasphemy toward God. We should not support anyone who blasphemes our Lord. I'm not Catholic. I'm Protestant Christian but I feel the same way. We are to guard our eyes and minds. The devil runs around seeking those that he can devour. A baby Christian could think this book is true, when there is no truth in it.

The only reason they would not want you reading a book is because they think that you would believe it and they don't believe followers are smart enough to figure the truth.

Anything that the Vatican perceives a threat to its doctrine or ideology they will do whatever they can to stop it. After all look at what they did to Galileo.
