The original is "Aicha" by (Cheb) Khaled, it's from 1996.

There have been remakes of the song by other groups, not all of them in French. If it was popular in 2001, you may have heard one of these remakes.
If you haven't done so already, definitely take a look at the lyrics (of the original). It'll increase your appreciation for the song. It's very politically charged and quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs in favor of the emancipation of women/democracy.

Yes it's a famous French song by Cheb Khaled who is from Algeria. He sings it in French and a little part of it is in Arabic.
There was a remake done by a Danish band called Outlandish - this version is in English though.

Aisha/Aicha is an Arabic female name by the way - the whole song is about how this man loves this woman called Aisha and he offers her everything pearls (perles), jewels (bijoux) etc but she says I don't want any of this, all I want are the same rights as you and to be respected.
