That's bull$#!+.

If you cannot do the job, you should not apply for the job let alone accept the job.

Well, I think they should work someplace that does not sell liquor. What happens in a restaurant if they are a waiter, can they remove the empty glass that has two drops in it? What about the Christian that doesn't believe in liquor. I have worked many places, where there is swearing, drinking, and I was always free to leave and find employment elsewhere, which I did. The employer was free to fire me if I refused to sell a certain magazine or pack of smokes, but these are legal to sell and buy, and if I'm in a hurry and they have to find someone else to sell me liquor, if I want it. I will go elsewhere to shop, not because I am against Muslims, but because I'm in a hurry and I am buying a legal product that store sells. What about pork? That will be next and then what after that. And then in a democracy other faiths will demand things and soon non religious people will demand things. Find a job that is compatible with your faith. Good Grief!!!

Well, Ithink it's bullocks, myself.

I used to work in a deli.

I was a vegetarian.

Did I have the right to not cut meat? No. I did, however, have the right to find a job that didn't require me to ignore my beliefs.

It's like pharmacists who want to decide what drugs to dispense based upon their religious beliefs. It's the job, dude. Don't like it? Get another job.

If you are morally opposed to doing something, you should not take a job in which you are required to do that thing. end story.

Edit: I think aunt is right that they will get lots of applications from grateful muslims, but they may also see frustrated customers go elsewhere.

I think it is a very wise and compassionate decision on the part of the supermarket chain. But I also note that the head of the Muslim council said it was not really necessary. He says that Muslims do not commit a sin by touching the containers of alcoholic beverages because they are simply carrying out a task which is necessary for their job. So it is even more admirable for the supermarket chain to declare that it is not a necessary part of their job, thereby reducing their inner conflict on the issue.

My guess is they are going to get a lot of applications for employment from grateful Muslims. Of course, they can assign one or two check-outs specifically for the purchase of alcoholic beverages, and assign non-Muslims to that position. It's not that difficult to do.

Idiotic.
What employer would hire someone that ignorant?
It will be allowed for a VERY short time but the bottom line is this; clerks take in money for the company, the company doesn't like losing money. It will be therefore easier to lose the clerk and replace him or her with someone who isn't brainwashed by a bronze aged cult. Thereby making the company more money.
Isn't capitalism great?

I don't think anyone should be forced to hire or accomodate someone who can not or will not perform duties either explict in the job description or integral to it. If you can not or will not perform a duty which is an integral part of a job you are not qualified for it.

i think it's retarded. i say this because the head of the muslim council stated it wasn't a sin for muslims to touch the bottles, so there's no valid reason for the new legislation.

besides that, with so many religions in the world, it's impossible to accomodate ALL of them in every situation.

as a pagan, i have many vegetarian/vegan friends, if they work at a grocery store, they still have to handle the meat products!!!!!

No religious accomodation from me. If you can't do the job, don't apply. That goes for a weasley Christian we just hired at my company. Everytime something comes up that requires a bit of extra effort, he suddenly remembers he has to run to church.

It seems unecessary, as far as I was aware Islam only prohibits the consumption of alcohol, not its handling and selling to non-Moslems.
